The newest game that Crytek, the folks who brought us the original Far Cry, is working on is Hunt: Showdown. Hunt: Showdown is a first person game set in a huge sandbox world- the kind of game that Crytek made their name with to begin with.
“What made this company is open world, sandbox, you’re walking around in a cool environment and you’re approaching compounds—you’re doing this in Crysis, right? And if you take a look at Hunt, you’re in an open world, a sandbox world, you’re moving around compounds, you’re trying to infiltrate them. You have some special powers and stuff like this. A lot of gun play, a first persons hooter. This is why we’re doing this game: we’re playing to the strength of what we know,” Magnus Larbrant, the game’s Creative Director says in the video.
The new developer diary for the game shows us the thinking that went on behind the scenes as Crytek made the game, and specifically focuses on the game’s level design- which is often an aspect that tends to get overlooked when it comes to open world games.
It will be interesting to see whether this new game can live up to the excellent lineage of Far Cry – because of how technically stunning it was, its game design was also an important factor, making it an unforgettable experience for the time, and today. Hopefully, Crytek manages to recreate that with this new game, and rebound from its current slump.
