Rainbow Six: Siege‘s developers famously pooh-poohed the idea of their game ever getting a battle royale mode, stating that it would “make no sense”, but their former colleague doesn’t seem to think so. Alex Hutchinson, former creative director at Ubisoft Montreal, and veteran of AAA games such as Far Cry 4 and Assassin’s Creed 3, recently shared the not at all controversial opinion that in a year from now, every online multiplayer shooter will have battle royale modes.
Aaccording to Hutchinson, there will be effort required to get this to happen, but the effort is a choice, not the obstacle, especially with the potential returns in question. Given the insane concurrent success of PUBG and Fortnite, I can see where he is coming from- I even think he is largely right. I just don’t think that every single one of these will be successful. In fact, I think most won’t- remember all the Call of Duty clones from last generation? How many stuck around?
Meanwhile, if you want to play a battle royale game for now, go grab yourself PUBG or Fortnite.
Battle Royals is not a game type, it’s a game mode, like death match. It’s easy to build on top of virtually any shooter you already have. It’ll be shipping by default CoD and BF and every other online shooter within a year.

But more seriously: for the big players, the effort required is a choice not an obstacle.
