Development

Let It Die was first revealed to the public at Sony Computer Entertainment Japan’s press event in September 2013. At this time, the game was still working under the title Lily Bergamo which was later changed to Let it Die.

It was shown again at Tokyo Game Show in 2013 where further information was revealed to the media and public. At the event, the game’s protagonist was confirmed to be named Tae Loroi and later that Lily Bergamo had been cancelled with Let it Die taking its place because of essentially being the same game.

Gematsu reported at the time that, “As it turns out, Let it Die is essentially the same game as the previously revealed Lily Bergamo that was shown off last fall, retaining the original idea of what the team is calling an ‘extreme action game’ coupled with asynchronous online gameplay while expanding on them with survival aspects. The transition to the game in its current form commenced around the end of last year as a result of the previously mentioned creative soul searching that Suda and company underwent.”

Following this revelation, it was at E3 2014 that the game was officially re-announced as Let It Die. It is expected to launch some time in 2015 and has been developed on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 4.

Story

Let It Die PS4
Following the re-branding of Lily Bergamo to Let it Die, there’s nothing really known about the game’s story. What we do know is that it will still feature its companion app and that the core concept of having the game be an “extreme” action hack and slash title remains.

Gameplay

Let It Die Promo Image

Let It Die operates on the free to play business model and features violently over-the-top hack and slash mechanics. The death of the player is expected to be important as dying will allegedly see you inserted into another player’s world. These worlds aren’t solely inhabited by other players though -the game will have normal AI enemies in it too.

While it hasn’t been elaborated on just yet, the game does feature a levelling system that is thought to improve the player’s character and/or equipment. Some players have been shown to be largely unclothed except for a helmet whereas others are wearing full body armour. Whether or not these are just aesthetic or will change the game isn’t yet clear.

Following the release of the Tokyo Game Show trailer, Let It Die was revealed to be very visceral and full of blood and gore. Players are seen hacking of limbs, impaling each other with weapons and shot multiple times in the face with a crossbow. A massive flame thrower was also spotted in the trailer.
