Yesterday, we reported that Epic’s Fortnite had mistakenly enabled cross platform play between PS4 and Xbox One owners for a few hours, thus becoming the first game to allow that capability- even if only briefly, and only unintentionally.
Speaking on Twitter, Xbox boss Phil Spencer, long a proponent of cross platform play- indeed, he has been pushing for it since last year, and has spearheaded cross platform play initiatives with Valve and Nintendo, and continues outreach with Sony- said that he wished that cross platform play in Fortnite shouldn’t have been turned off at all.
Of course, the reason that Fortnite, and other games, can’t have cross platform play between the PS4 and other consoles, is because Sony will not allow it- after years of stating that they would, if only the competition would play ball, they back-pedalled on their stance immediately once the competition, both Microsoft and Nintendo, did allow it.
We can only hope that continued outrage on this topic will create enough pressure that they eventually end up capitulating.
I would have liked to see them leave it on.
