Capcom have to be commended for how resoundingly successful they’ve been in bringing Resident Evil back to top form after a terrible slump, and how well they’ve been managing the series since they’ve done so. And it looks like they want to keep this momentum going- the upcoming Resident Evil 3 remake will be the third mainline RE game in four years, and rumours and leaks have suggested that they’re going to keep that pace going.
Prominent RE and Capcom leaker Dusk Golem recently took to Twitter to drop some more teases about the future of the series (and not the first time over these past few weeks, either), and some interesting stuff has potentially come to light. In one among a series of tweets, they confirmed that a new Resident Evil game due out after a couple years from now will be developed by the indie Capcom-backed studio M-Two. M-Two, in case you’re unaware, is also the lead developer on the upcoming Resident Evil 3.
It’ll be interesting to see – if this turns out to be accurate – what this game will end up being. There is some clarity about the game to be released after RE3, but since this allegedly comes after even that one, things become a little foggier. As for the 2021 RE title (which has brought up time and time again even in the absence of an official announcement), reports have suggested that it’ll be neither Resident Evil 8, nor remake of Code Veronica. This alleged M-Two-developed 2022 game, however, things are a little less sure.
Meanwhile, in another tweet, Dusk Golem also re-iterated that Capcom wants to keep the annual release schedule of Resident Evil going, with one game coming out in 2021, and another in 2022- though there “may or may not be a year delay in 2023.”
As always, remember to take this with a grain of salt until we hear something from official channels, even if Dusk Golem’s track record – especially when it comes to Resident Evil – has been very impressive in the past.
As for the immediate future, Resident Evil 3 is out for the PS4, Xbox One, and PC on April 3, with a demo scheduled to come out before that.
