"If I had to say it, I’d say ‘See you in Los Angeles next June’. Is that what it sounds like?" vice president and CBO Takao Yamane says.

We first heard about Project G.G. when PlatinumGames announced the game with a brief teaser showing a giant hero versus giant monster battle. Led by Hideki Kamiya, the game was said to be at the time the third game in his self-dubbed superhero trilogy (following Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101), though since then, we haven’t seen or heard much about the game.

That might not be the case a year from now though. Speaking during a recent interview with Famitsu, several key staff members at PlatinumGames talked about Project G.G., which is one of several games in development at the studio right now, and when we might hear more about it.

When asked about when Project G.G. might be unveiled, newly appointed vice president and CBO Takao Yamane seemed to suggest that PlatinumGames could have more to say at (or around) E3 next year. “Hmm, well, let’s see. If I had to say it, I’d say ‘See you in Los Angeles next June’. Is that what it sounds like?” he said (translation via VGC). “To put it another way, we won’t have any information until that point. Please look forward to further information.”

The aforementioned Hideki Kamiya also spoke about the project, explaining that it turned into a much bigger and more ambitious project than he had initially envisioned. He also mentioned, in line with previous similar comments, that while Project G.G. will have a core gameplay mechanic similar to previous games by the studio, it won’t be a purely action title.

“Previous titles have had a core game component,” Kamiya said. “For example, in The Wonderful 101 there was ‘Unite Morph’, and in Bayonetta there was ‘Witch Time’. A core system similar to these is what is hinted at in the teaser for Project G.G.

“If we had produced the game in its original form, it would probably have been produced as a pure action game, as it has been up to now. However, Inaba’s ambitions took over and the game expanded greatly. So this game will not end up being all action.”

PlatinumGames has previously confirmed that it is going to publish Project G.G. whenever it launches, and whichever platforms it launches for.

PlatinumGames’ Bayonetta 3, meanwhile, launches for the Nintendo Switch on October 28.

PlatinumGames' CEO suggests that the Japanese studio, best known for Bayonetta and NieR: Automata, might be shifting to live service models soon.

PlatinumGames has delivered a number of best-in-class action titles over the years, and with games like Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, Vanquish, NieR: Automata, Astral Chain, and many more under its belt, the Japanese studio has established itself as a leader in the single player action space. The future, however, might look very different for PlatinumGames.

In a recent interview with Famitsu (translated by VGC), while talking about the upcoming Hideki Kamiya-directed Project G.G., Atsushi Inaba – the newly appointed CEO of PlatinumGames – seemed to suggest that future games by the developer will be different from what it’s been known for in the most (which isn’t the first time he’s said something along those lines), before adding that he wants Platinum titles to be “enjoyed for longer periods of time”- which, of course, seems to suggest that the studio is eyeing the live service space.

“Project G.G. is still in the stage of testing various things, so I can’t tell you much about it, but when it comes to future game production, we want to focus on creating games that are different from the past,” he said. “I would like to focus on creating games that can be enjoyed and loved for a longer period of time.”

Inaba went on to add that while PlatinumGames would still “like to cherish” single player releases like the upcoming Bayonetta 3, its future projects will move in a different direction, with the change being brought about by “the changes in the market”.

“Of course, we would like to cherish and create small but brilliantly conceived games such as Sol Cresta, and games in which you can enjoy the process of clearing the game by going through one-off, well-designed stages, such as Bayonetta,” Inaba said. “However, the projects that we are trying to create for the future will be different in terms of their structure. Considering the changes in the market over the next five years or so, I think it is absolutely necessary for us to do this. I’m sorry for being so vague, but I think that’s all I can tell you right now.”

PlatinumGames has made a number of moves over the last couple of years that have hinted at the studio’s plans to expand and to adopt new strategies. The developer opened a second studio in Tokyo in 2020, and later confirmed that the new studio would be focused on developing live service games for consoles. Platinum also confirmed in 2020 that it was working on a new in-house engine to help make “bigger, more expressive games than ever before, and with greater ease.”

Self-publishing plans for the game will allow Platinum to share details on their own terms.

PlatinumGames announced Project G.G. last year, the next game to be directed by Hideki Kamiya. When it launches – whenever that will be – it will also be the first new game to be published by PlatinumGames themselves (they also published The Wonderful 101: Remastered last year), and that, among other things, means the developer will be free to share details on the game however it pleases.

Speaking in a recent interview with VGC, Kamiya said that owing to the fact that there is no publisher that they’re working with for the game, he will be free to share new stuff on the game whenever he likes.

“Since we’re self-publishing, there are no publishers to get mad at me this time, so I’ll be sharing things online, putting up screenshots whenever I like,” he said.

Meanwhile, studio head Atsushi Inaba also spoke about the same, saying that PlatinumGames will be more open with fans and “have a closer interaction” with them.

“I think we would really like to make this something that is more open and visible to our fans and the media,” Inaba said. “What we have at the moment, we just did a short little teaser and then it’s been a year since then. But that’s not how we always want things to be: we definitely want to have a closer interaction with our fans and so we’re hoping to get to that development style where we can share things as we move along.”

Inaba went on to explain that different publishers have different approaches to supervision as far as rollout of information on games is concerned, but with Project G.G., PlatinumGames is “hoping to be more open.”

“We don’t have that much say over projects that we’re not publishing,” Inaba said. “And we understand different titles require different approaches, so we respect the publisher’s decisions.

“So if there is a difference between what we want to do with Project G.G. versus what we normally do with our other titles, it’s not really a criticism for those publishers: we respect their approaches. But for this title especially, our approach as a company is that we’re hoping to be more open.”

Other than Project G.G., PlatinumGames are currently working on several other projects, including Bayonetta 3 (which is to be published by Nintendo) and Babylon’s Fall (which will be published by Square Enix).

Project G.G., meanwhile, is likely to be a cross-gen title whenever it launches- though it’s unlikely to release any time soon.

The giant hero game is being hyped up as something special.

Around this same time last year, workhorse studio PlatinumGames teased that they were working on a new IP that was “unlike anything else.” The company seemingly went through a rough patch where we heard very little from them, until eventually Project G.G. was announced as well as a remastered version of The Wonderful 101. And, as many expected, Project G.G. had been foreshadowed.

In an interview with VGC, PlatinumGames Head Atsushi Inaba confirmed that, yes, Project G.G. was the game they had teased that would be like nothing else before. Unfortunately, he didn’t going into any details about what that means.

We know little about Project G.G. There was a very brief teaser trailer shown that looked neat but showed almost nothing, and that it’s apparently planned for current consoles and PC. The game will continue in legendary Director’s Hideki Kamiya ‘hero saga’ of titles that are based around costumed heroes and the various genres they’ve inhabited. That began with Viewtiful Joe, then The Wonderful 101 and now Project G.G. We’ll look forward to seeing new information about it hopefully soon.

The game's director also promises that it's not going to be a very niche title.

It’s been a while since the mastermind Hideki Kamiya directed a game, but he’s coming off his mini-hiatus soon with the recently announced Project G.G. It’s pretty clear that the game isn’t too far along in development right now, seeing as it’s neither shown us any gameplay (all we’ve seen is a CG trailer), nor does it even have an actual name right now. As such, we don’t exactly know what to expect from it, but speaking with IGN, Kamiya provided some brief snippets of information.

Given that it’s a game being made by PlatinumGames and being directed by the man behind the likes of Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, and Viewtiful Joe, it would be safe to assume that Project G.G. will be an action game of some sort. According to Kamiya though, while it will indeed have action elements, that’s not all it will be.

“While Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101 were pure action games, this will not be like that,” said Kamiya on how the game will differ from what Platinum have dubbed as his hero games trilogy. “Any game I make will of course include carefully crafted action elements, but this won’t be simply an action game. There will be much more to it than that.”

Kamiya also says that Project G.G. won’t be a niche title. He explained that the giant hero schtick is a popular one in Japan, but seeing as he doesn’t want to restrict himself and the game to just Japanese audiences, the game probably won’t have a Japanese setting- though that, curiously enough, isn’t something that he’s decided for sure yet.

“[I]t won’t be a very niche kind of game; giant hero stories are popular in Japan, with things like Ultraman, and the game will have that kind of flavor to it, but I don’t want to restrict myself to the Japanese hero genre,” he said. “So the setting will probably not be Japan, as that might be restrictive. But I haven’t decided yet.”

PlatinumGames studio head Atsushi Inaba also spoke about the game’s release date, re-iterating that the studio plans on publishing it on all current and next-gen platforms.

“Basically we’d like to hit PS4, Xbox One, Switch and Steam, and then of course PS5 and Series X are coming soon,” he said. “We don’t know exactly when this will come out, but we’d like to release it on whatever are the main platforms at that time.”

Though a launch date hasn’t yet been decided, Inaba said it’s probably not going to be a wait as long as, say, three years.

“Put it this way, we’re not looking at something as long as three years,” Inaba said. “Nor will it be as soon as half a year or a year. But as our first self-owned and self-published game, we want to deliver it as soon as we can.”

Kamiya, however, added that he’d rather focus on making a good game than making one that can launch quickly.

“I don’t have any desire to release games quickly,” he said. “My only desire is to release games that are good.”

PlatinumGames has been making some pretty big moves lately, launching a Kickstarter for The Wonderful 101: Remastered (which has grossed over $1.850 million so far) and plans to open a new studio in Tokyo. It also revealed Project G.G., the third title in Hideki Kamiya’s superhero trilogy. The recent teaser showcased an Ultraman-like figure battling a giant monster.

Speaking to IGN, director Hideki Kamiya explained why a giant hero premise was chosen and how it will differ from previous games. “We have labelled it as being part of the Hideki Kamiya hero trilogy. The first two titles being Viewtiful Joe, which is a solo hero story, and The Wonderful 101, which is a story of a group of heroes. In Japan, the next type of hero would be the giant hero, and I’ve always wanted to make a game based on that idea.”

“But while Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101 were pure action games, this will not be like that. Any game I make will of course include carefully crafted action elements, but this won’t be simply an action game. There will be much more to it than that.”

While the tokukatsu and kaiju genres are well-known, Kamiya notes that Project G.G. won’t necessarily be restricted to the same. “[I]t won’t be a very niche kind of game; giant hero stories are popular in Japan, with things like Ultraman, and the game will have that kind of flavor to it, but I don’t want to restrict myself to the Japanese hero genre. So the setting will probably not be Japan, as that might be restrictive. But I haven’t decided yet.”

Platinum’s chief creative officer Atsushi Inaba talked a bit more about which platforms the game would release for. All current-gen consoles are on the menu at this time. “Basically we’d like to hit PS4, Xbox One, Switch and Steam, and then of course PS5 and Series X are coming soon. We don’t know exactly when this will come out, but we’d like to release it on whatever are the main platforms at that time.”

And while Project G.G. won’t take as long as three years to release, it won’t “as soon as half a year or a year. But as our first self-owned and self-published game, we want to deliver it as soon as we can.” Kamiya noted that he’s not interested in a quick release either. “Hey, I don’t have any desire to release games quickly! My only desire is to release games that are good.”

Stay tuned for more details on Project G.G. in the meantime. The PS5 and Xbox Series X slated to release this holiday season.

Director Hideki Kamiya notes that the game's finish line is "still a long away."

PlatinumGames’ Hideki Kamiya confirmed recently that the studio’s next title was Project G.G., the third and final title in the superhero trilogy. The first teaser for the game has now gone live and teases exactly what was described – a giant hero battling a giant monster, produced by Atsushi Inaba and directed by Hideki Kamiya. Check it out below.

In a statement to fans on the official site, Kamiya said that Project G.G. was “100 percent” a PlatinumGames property. “For everything from [Project GG’s] setting and characters, to its game design and story, to how it’s promoted – Platinum Games is in full control.” He also acknowledges that this approach isn’t without its downsides.

“We’ll be taking on new risks that we’ve never had to assume before as a contracted developer. Having full control over the Project GG IP gives us a ton of freedom, but also a ton of responsibility. Still, I think we can harness that sense of responsibility and turn it into motivation to make Project GG the best game it can be.”

Project G.G. is currently a working title, with the finish line for the game “still a long way away.” There’s no mention of a Kickstarter campaign like with The Wonderful 101: Remastered but PlatinumGames has said in the past that not all of its self-published titles will be crowd-funded. We’ll just have to wait for more details in the meantime.

As for The Wonderful 101: Remastered, it releases this May for North America. Platinum is also working on the Square Enix-published Babylon’s Fall for PS4 and PC, which will receive more details this Summer.
