"It is time to make our boss understand that he is not welcome on our premises” while mistreating his employees, said the unions.

Ubisoft had recently offered employees at its Paris branch the option of being part of a “voluntary mutual termination agreement”, which would essentially involve laying off 200 of its employees. In response, French unions Solidaires Informatique, STVJV, and CFE CGC have asked Ubisoft Paris employees to simply “stop working” if CEO Yves Guillemot shows up at the office.

As caught by Le Figaro (via GamesRadar), a union pamphlet started making the rounds telling the employees that they should leave their desks and gather in front of the building when Guillemot shows up to the Ubisoft Paris offices during his planned February 3rd visit.

“It is time to make our boss understand that he is not welcome on our premises as long as he continues to mistreat his employees,” reads the pamphlet. “We call on the employees of Ubisoft Paris to stop working if Yves Guillemot steps foot in our offices. Leave your desks, and gather in front of the building.”

This is the second time French unions have been involved with Ubisoft this month. Following the company having recently announced major organizational overhauls resulting in project cancellations, Solidaires Informatique had called for a half-day strike on January 22. Referring to the overhaul as a “disastrous announcement”, the union made three demands of Ubisoft: providing “decent” pay raises this year, ending its cost-cutting plans, and maintaining and extending its remote working conditions and options.

“This is an initial answer to the absurdity of management’s decisions,” said Solidaires Informatique in a post announcing the half-day strike. “Other strikes are currently being discussed. It is out of the question to let a boss run wild and destroy our working conditions. Perhaps we need to remind [Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot] that it is his employees who make the games.”

As for the overhaul itself, Ubisoft has officially cancelled five projects, including Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. The company referred to this move as a “major organizational, operational, and portfolio reset to reclaim creative leadership and restore sustainable growth.”

The new structure going forward revolves around five “Creative Houses”, each of which will be responsible for specific franchises or genres. CH1, for instance, is Vantage Studios, which will focus on Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed and Rainbow Six. CH4, on the other hand, will focus on fantasy and narrative-driven franchises like Anno, Prince of Persia, Rayman, and Beyond Good and Evil, among others.

Along with this, Ubisoft had also announced that it was working on four new IPs, one of which is March of Giants, which the company had only recently acquired from Amazon Games.

Curiously, among the projects that escaped cancellation was Beyond Good and Evil 2, which has been in development for well over a decade at this point. Ubisoft went on to note that the title “remains a priority,” and will be developed by Creative House 4.

This announcement wasn’t met with much confidence from shareholders, with its stock prices falling by over 30 percent that day. While the company’s shares might be slowly recovering now, at the time of publishing, it is still sitting at €4.75 per share, down from its €5.23 price before the announcement.

Ubisoft Paris's open-world shooter was a mess when it launched in 2019, but has seen multiple updates. Is it finally worth picking up?

You really can’t talk about Ghost Recon Breakpoint without first discussing Ghost Recon Wildlands. Developed by Ubisoft Paris (with help from several other Ubisoft studios) and released in 2017, it and Assassin’s Creed Origins were some of the first open-world titles that began to showcase much larger spaces than Ubisoft’s earlier titles.

Wildlands went much further with stuffing its world with bloat and repetitive objectives, and while the story wasn’t anything special, it provided a decent enough set-up for players to hunt down cartel members.

Despite all of the issues, the presence of an AI squad, four-player co-op support, realistic weaponry and an assortment of content helped make it successful at launch. Ubisoft saw this and supported the game for years, adding new features like Ghost Mode and Tier 1, the option to play solo without teammates (remember this one), and paid DLC.

When it announced Ghost Recon Breakpoint, the publisher seemed to be set for success. It simply had to deliver the same compelling gameplay but with new objectives, tactical options, and a new map. Ubisoft Paris revealed a heavier emphasis on survival mechanics, like injuries and stamina management, but the biggest change was it being a solo experience. No AI teammates. The idea was to reinforce a feeling of isolation against overwhelming odds in the new setting of Auroa.

Fan backlash meant the developer had to promise AI teammates post-launch. Even then, the addition of loot elements also caused concern, especially with Ubisoft tossing this into more and more of its franchises over the years without any regard for whether they fit.

Cut to October 2019, and Ghost Recon Breakpoint was released to a disastrous response. Rife with bugs and performance issues, it was a terrible experience from top to bottom for fans and newcomers alike. Instead of an open-world tactical stealth shooter that fans had come to enjoy (even though Wildlands is a distinct step down from previous Ghost Recons), they were given some faux-looter shooter with a social hub.

The gameplay was dumbed down; the survival elements meant almost nothing; the story was horrendous; the enemy AI was a joke when it wasn’t downright atrocious; Auroa as a location felt barren and boring – the list went on. That’s before getting to the microtransactions or, once again, how utterly insignificant the addition of loot and Gear Level was to the overall experience.

But don’t take our word for it. Ubisoft stocks plummeted following its release, and CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that sales for the title were disappointing. Shortly after its release, Ubisoft Paris acknowledged feedback and fan disappointment before announcing plans to revamp the game into something more akin to its predecessor.

Live support for Ghost Recon Breakpoint ended in April 2022. While Ubisoft added NFTs to the title with its ineptly handled Ubisoft Quartz, the development team is working on an unannounced project. Rumors circulated about a new single-player-focused Ghost Recon being in development. However, after Ubisoft Bucharest’s Ghost Recon Frontline was cancelled, there’s been no word on this.

So whether you pointed and laughed at the game’s release in 2019 or spotted the game recently on Steam, the question is: Is Ghost Recon Breakpoint fixed? More importantly, is it even worth playing? The answer to both these questions is actually yes. While it won’t capture the feel of Wildlands’ setting, Ubisoft Paris released several free updates over the years, improving and revamping the experience in several ways.

It first introduced some changes to the Gunsmith, which allowed players to choose different firing modes for their weapons, like single fire, full auto, additional burst, and automatic fire, depending on the weapon type. It also added new scopes, muzzle flashes and attachments like GL M203 Grenade Launcher and Extended Magazines, increasing the amount of customization.

In 2020, the developer followed up on its promise and brought back AI teammates. They could be enabled or disabled (for those who still preferred a solo experience) and issued commands. Due to their patchwork nature, they’re never referred to in the story and don’t provide much by way of banter. But hey, they’re there, and the game is a far better experience than without them.

By now, the game had also seen two Live Events, and while the first is notable for, well, adding Terminators (don’t ask), the second, Resistance, is more significant. It added new mission types like hostage rescue, convoy ambush and so on, as players strengthened the presence of rebels on Auroa through new faction missions.

Over time, the Gunsmith would see further modifications like new Custom Stocks, Shared Stocks, Under-Barrel Grenade Launchers, Barrels, etc. The first and only raid, Project Titan, received some interesting new features. Players could explore its location, Golem Island, to discover settlements and complete missions. Best of all, players could discover raid gear during all this. Those who enjoyed co-op had a new Threat: Critical difficulty with a tougher boss, higher enemy health and weekly modifiers, but with four unique weapons available to earn.

All this would pale next to the biggest and most significant update – the Ghost Experience. It added new gameplay features like cooking grenades, cleaning weapons, picking up mines and C4 placed by Ghosts, deciding whether syringes could heal injuries (or not, thus increasing how punishing they were), and much more. Darkest Night created some of the darkest settings in the series and made NVG so much more important. Players also dealt more damage from stealth, making it much more important, while enemy AI was shored up and improved to feel more realistic.

The sheer range of options and quality-of-life features is also worth noting. You could finally turn off Gear Level, turning this into a much closer experience to Wildlands, and adjust whether previous event elements, like rebels and Terminators, appeared in the world.

Don’t want to deal with drones outside of story missions or when destroying Behemoths? Turn them off, which is also possible with helicopter patrols and Azraels. Suffice it to say that the Ghost Experience is really where the tide started to turn for Breakpoint, though constant updates to address crashes and other bugs shouldn’t be glossed over.

Ubisoft Paris would continue releasing new rewards and a new collaboration event in 2021, this time with Rainbow Six Siege, which introduced three Operators that could act as AI teammates. You had new mission types, like investigating zones with toxic gas and breaching buildings to assail enemies.

However, the next major update arrived a few months later with Teammate Progression, allowing you to unlock new upgrades for each AI teammate, from unique abilities to passives. Completing challenges garnered additional cosmetics while also garnering XP for teammates, and character textures were overhauled to look more appealing.

Of course, many will notice that Auroa, and the story, as a whole, was still the same boring mess that players didn’t enjoy at launch. Operation Motherland addressed this and provided a massive new mode called Conquest that was more in line with Wildlands’ campaign. Instead of following the original game’s story, you now traverse each region and freed them from the Bodarks (who first debuted in the Red Patriot DLC). Even Karen Bowman returned to lend her aid.

Over 60 new missions were added, which players could complete in any order they wished to free each region. It also added Optical Camo for turning invisible for brief periods, with unlockable chests to improve efficiency; a new level cap of 99; weapon mastery; unique weather scenarios daily; and new cosmetic rewards. It’s not quite A Realm Reborn, but it provided an alternative campaign for players to enjoy without being railroaded into any one path.

While Ghost Recon Wildlands is still recommended due to the sheer strength of the overall package, Ghost Recon Breakpoint is no longer the cursed follow-up it was at launch. It still suffers from plenty of bugs and glitches, Auroa still isn’t all that interesting of a location, and it’s always online (Wildlands has an offline option), so you’re at the mercy of servers. Nevertheless, if you ever see it on sale and enjoy Wildlands, it may be worth checking out, even if it did take several years to get to this point. Here’s hoping the next Ghost Recon is a more solid experience out of the gate.

The open-world tactical shooter is the latest Ubisoft title on Steam, joining The Division 2, Immortals Fenyx Rising, and more.

Ubisoft Paris’ Ghost Recon Breakpoint is launching later today on Steam. It was released in October 2019 for PC via the Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Connect, along with Xbox One and PS4.

The story takes place in Auroa, with Skell Technology taken over by a rogue unit called The Wolves. The Ghosts embark on a mission to liberate the island, but after their transport is shot down, it becomes a fight for survival against armies of drones.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint is infamous for launching with numerous bugs and issues, while fans criticized its many design choices. It’s seen several revamps over the years, particularly the return of AI squadmates. Along with the Standard Edition, the Gold Edition, and Deluxe Edition will also be available.

The Gold Edition features the base game, Year 1 Pass, Infiltration Pack, and Ultimate Pack. The Deluxe Edition includes the base game and Infiltration Pack. All editions should be discounted for a brief period after launching on Steam.

After cancelling Ghost Recon Frontline, Ubisoft Paris is rumored to be working on a new mainline title. It was reportedly planned to release before April 2023 but seems further out than initially planned. Stay tuned for more details in the coming months, especially with Ubisoft stating that a “large” unannounced premium game would launch in 2023-24.

Michel Ancel has moved on from video games to focus on wild life.

In a rather sudden announcement, Rayman and Beyond Good and Evil creator Michel Ancel has moved on from video games. On Instagram, the former director said he was stopping work on video games to “fully focus on my second passion: Wild Life!” Ancel is currently planning to create an open wildlife sanctuary that will be dedicated to “education, nature lover and wild animals.”

As for how this impacts Beyond Good and Evil 2, which Ancel has been trying to get made for years now, and WiLD, he responded, “No worries, since many months now the teams are autonomous and the projects are going super well. Beautiful things to be seen soon.” Beyond Good and Evil 2 senior producer Guillaume Brunier also provided some new details in an update on the game’s development.

Brunier noted that Ancel “hasn’t been directly involved in BG&E2 for some time now, as the team have been hard at work building on top of the solid creative foundation he helped shape. The team’s collective strength has us well on our way to developing a flagship next-generation action-adventure game.”

The development team has passed an “important internal milestone” that offers “hours of gameplay and an incredible level of freedom in a seamless online sandbox, building upon the promise of our tech demos shown at E3.” Ubisoft Paris, which developed Ghost Recon Breakpoint, has been announced as a partner studio with the development team’s size being ramped up.

“Next milestone: We are aiming to share more and show you the game in action sometime next year, once we pass our next internal production milestones,” said Brunier.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 was first announced at E3 2017 with no platforms confirmed. With Brunier mentioning “next-generation,” it could possibly see a release for PS5 and Xbox Series X. Stay tuned for more details in the meantime.

Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint received a poor critical and commercial response at launch. However, the development team has been working hard to remedy its most egregious problems, introducing a new immersive experience to toggle off Gear Score and reinforce survival elements. However, one of the biggest updates – which has been promised since last year – is AI teammates.

While Ubisoft Paris had delayed the update several times, it promised a Summer release window for the same. Due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, update 2.1.0 will release in mid-July. It was also confirmed that update 2.0.5, originally set for June, would release alongside update 2.1.0 next month.

There’s more than just AI teammates incoming. The two updates will also contain bug fixes, updates to the Gunsmith, PvP updates and other quality of life improvements. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks. In the meantime, you can check out our initial review for Ghost Recon Breakpoint here.

The developer is also busy with Episode 3 and the next class.

Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint had its fair share of issues at launch but perhaps none was more pronounced than the lack of AI teammates. This was actually announced with the game’s reveal but Ubisoft Paris was quick to backtrack on the same. Despite still being in development, there haven’t been updates about them until now.

In a new blog post, the development team confirmed that AI teammates would be coming this Summer. Given that the second live event is planned for the same period and Episode 3 is in the works along with a new class, it wouldn’t be strange to see all of these features added together. For now, we’ll have to wait and see.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint has received a fairly significant update with Immersive Mode, which allows players to disable Gear Score and up the realism to be more brutal. It also saw the release of Episode 2: Deep State with Splinter Cell’s Sam Fisher returning to work with Nomad. The new story missions are available for Year 1 Pass holders but the first mission is free for all players.

Ubisoft says the "complexity of integrating this new mode" has been challenging.

Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint was set to receive a new immersive mode this month, one that would radically change the game and provide a more realistic experience. It would have also seen the new Engineer class added. Unfortunately, the development has confirmed that both features have been pushed back to Spring.

In a recent blog post, the developer says that, “Our objective with the new immersive mode is to provide an impactful update to the game using your feedback as the foundation. The immersive mode is built upon the results of the Community Survey, your observations gathered by our Community Managers, and workshops with the Delta Company alongside extensive playtesting. We are in the process of creating an experience that will change the way you are able to play Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint.”

It hasn’t been easy though. Ubisoft noted that the “complexity of integrating this new mode” has been a challenge and it’s pushing things back to “ensure that the experience will be a great one when it releases.” The Engineer class is also planned to release at the same time along with Episode 2, which contains new story missions, and the next title update. More details on immersive mode will be provided on March 5th.

Though Ghost Recon Breakpoint saw its Terminator event go live in January, it also suffered a delay before release. It remains to be seen just how game-changing the new immersive mode will be, especially given the backlash against Breakpoint’s mechanics at launch. As always, stay tuned for more details.

Ubisoft Paris wants to fans to have a "gritty and authentic military experience."

Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint didn’t have the warmest reception at launch. The fact that it was such a disappointment was called out by Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot (who also announced the delay of titles like Watch Dogs Legion, Rainbow Six: Quarantine and Gods and Monsters). The development team is committed to fixing things and adding new content.

While content like the Terminator event and first raid are coming up, it seems a more realistic mode could be added as well. In its recent blog post, the developer said it was “happy to see players embracing the new elements of the game, but we also understand that there are areas of improvements.” It addressed fans wanting survival elements to have greater impact and how the tiered loot was generally disliked.

“One of the key elements of our vision for Ghost Recon is to immerse our fans in a gritty and authentic military experience. In line with this vision and the feedback we received, we are working on a more radical and immersive version of Ghost Recon Breakpoint. We also want to let you tailor your experience to the way you want to enjoy the game, since freedom of choice has always been part of the Ghost Recon DNA.”

Whether this is a completely new mode or parameters that players can adjust for a new playthrough is unknown. The developer revealed that it was too early to outline how things would work. “It is top of mind for the team and we will keep you updated as we progress.”

Ghost Recon Breakpoint is currently available for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. It will also be coming to Google Stadia when the service launches next month. You can read our review for the game here and the many things that players disliked about it here.

Ubisoft will remove the cap entirely with title update 1.0.3.

Among the many, many issues that players have with Ubisoft’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint is the Battle Rewards system. It essentially functions like a Battle Pass, doling out rewards with each tier. Unfortunately, there’s a daily cap on the Battle Points that can be earned. When each rank demands more Battle Points than the last, it can become a frustrating endeavor.

Fortunately, things have started to change. The most recent live update has increased the daily cap from 400 to 600 Battle Points. Players will also receive 30 Battle Points from Faction Support missions, as opposed to 15. The developer also confirmed the daily cap would be removed in title update 1.0.3.

More information on the next title update will be provided soon so stay tuned. Ghost Recon Breakpoint is currently available for Xbox One, PS4 and PC.
Solid gunplay and new mechanics make for decent holidays in Auroa but will it be worth the long haul?

Ghost Recon Breakpoint is out in about a week, less if you’re paying for early access. I had a chance to try it out thanks to the recent open beta and that too after servers were finally online – more on that later. Many improvements and changes were made following the closed beta so while it could be further polished, this is as close to the final build as we’re going to get.

It’s been odd journey for the franchise since the transition into the open world format with Wildlands. However, Breakpoint’s mesh of genres may be the oddest we’ve seen yet, even for a Ubisoft title. Part-Assassin’s Creed Odyssey in loot hunting and quest design, part-Division 2 in loot scaling and build “optimization” and still very much Ghost Recon Wildlands in terms of gunplay.

"To its credit, Ghost Recon Breakpoint does a good job of easing you in and pacing the story despite everyone knowing what’s up."

You probably know the story by now which, given how events play out in-game. You’re Nomad, en route to investigating Auroa after the archipelago goes dark. Entering with a full range of troops, it’s not long before a drone swarm annihilates your chopper and Nomad is left fighting for survival. It’s not a bad set-up especially as you heal up, sneak past enemies and see Cole D. Walker, a former Ghost, killing his own.

Such an event is treated as revelatory in the game world but we already knew that. We also already know that Walker and his crew, the Wolves, have taken over the island and Skell Technology, commandeering its drone technology. To its credit, Ghost Recon Breakpoint does a good job of pacing the story despite the general outline being known. You meet up with the Homesteaders in Erewhon, reunite with a few Ghost buddies, attempt (and fail) to leave the island and set out to find Jace Skell, the head of Skell Tech who may or may not be doing all of this against his own will. Spoiler: He’s probably being coerced by Walker. Probably.

Things get odd when you head to Erewhon because it’s essentially a social space. So from a story standpoint, you’re Nomad, the sole Ghost capable of getting things done and bringing down Walker and his Ghosts (with some help here and there). In practice, the social space is full of other players, all pursuing the same course of action. It’s the same narrative dissonance that affects games like Destiny 1 and 2 – there are numerous heroes or, in this case, “sole survivors” like you.

"Unlike what the initial reveals indicated, the survival elements aren’t nearly as brutal. "

Outside of the initial encounter, I found it quite relaxing to explore Auroa, driving past guard patrols and seeing helicopters oscillate between taking me down or just going about their business. Higher level areas with tougher enemies and drones certainly exist though. If you’re detected, then the Wolves will descend on you, though it’s not like you’re being actively hunted outside of this.

Unlike what the initial reveals indicated, the survival elements aren’t nearly as brutal. You have a stamina bar that runs out when sprinting for extended periods of time. Tumbling down hills when the stamina bar is empty causes your max stamina to deplete, which is easily fixed by drinking water. Managing thirst and hunger aren’t really major goals here.

Damage can be healed through medical syringes and taking cover but any injuries will require…well, medical syringes. Granted, this is on Regular difficulty and I could see things being slightly tweaked here and there. To Breakpoint‘s credit, taking too much damage results in a major injury that only allows for sidearm usage and may even cause limping.

You’re also sliding down hills now as opposed to just sprinting, which makes you consider the harrowing risk of navigating down slope quickly. Fortunately, there are numerous Bivouacs around to rest up and is eat food, the latter providing more damage resistance or crafting rations for increased accuracy and other benefits. You can gather materials in the wild for crafting as well, making these Bivouacs more than just standard checkpoints found in the wild. You may just use them for fast-traveling above all else but it’s nice to see options for preparation and tactics embedded within.

"I could see a scenario where the gear pieces can help further tailor one’s style, offsetting some of the negatives that certain weapons and their attachments have."

Specializations can be selected and as you level up, different perks can be unlocked benefits like increased health regeneration or less stamina usage and so on. Each Specialization has a different “Ultimate” – I went with the Assault class for the sake of running and gunning. It conferred “True Grit” which increased gun accuracy and stability – kills would restore health and extend the skill’s duration. Ranking up within a Specialization provides skill points and different rewards like camos (which can also be unlocked by completing different challenges and tasks).

Weapons and gear drop with different Gear Scores. Each gear piece also has a unique perk, like increased handling or accuracy. It’s not raining loot like Borderlands 3 but there is a significant amount of time spent switching out gear for the sake of higher numbers. This provides stronger damage resistance against tougher foes, though again, one head shot is all that’s needed at times.

I could see a scenario where the gear pieces help further tailor one’s style, offsetting some of the negatives that certain weapons and their attachments have. It does throw out the established trend of “obtain a weapon and use it throughout the game” that Wildlands had though. This may irk some players especially given that they need to buy the same weapon at higher Gear Score from a blueprints vendor. Even when locating weapons in the wild by asking for information or uncovering evidence, you’re essentially unlocking the blueprint for crafting it back at the hub. It’s not a one-and-done cycle like the previous game by a long shot.

"There doesn’t seem to be much point to the inclusion of loot tiers aside from gating content behind Gear Scores."

The store does offer some weapons and gear to quickly boost your Gear Score up. You can also acquire vehicles, attachments and so on using Skell Credits (which were doled out at a fairly regular clip, discounting the 30,000 or so provided initially in the beta). There’s no looter shooter hook per say – the benefits offered by gear aren’t minimal, at least at my current rarity, but they didn’t represent anything even close to game-breaking like The Division 2, forget Borderlands. Which is fine, don’t get me wrong, but there doesn’t seem to be much point to their inclusion aside from gating content behind Gear Scores.

The guns themselves are nothing super-crazy – if you enjoyed using the weapons in Wildlands, Breakpoint‘s gunplay feels even more satisfying. The sound effects could be improved for sure but as a whole, I enjoyed snapping to targets, planting headshots and moving on. Stealth was still fine – CQC doesn’t feel incredibly different as enemies will still react to dead bodies, become alert and track you down, and all converge when you’re located. It’s definitely better than Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, which saw enemies, mercenaries, captains and bears seemingly appearing out of thin air to kill you. However, it’s still odd to sneakily stab an enemy numerous times while their friend is inches away, oblivious to the noise.

There are new mechanics to take advantage of like Sync-Shot Drones that can be thrown out to make up for the lack of AI teammates. A blow-torch can be used to carve through fences stealthily. Damage over time grenades allow for area control. It’s admittedly weird to have to invest skill points into unlocking something like night-vision goggles but that’s fairly early in the tree so it’s no real biggie.

"Meanwhile, while the open world exploration is helped by the addition of investigations and more nuanced side quests, many of the typical Ubisoft tropes remain."

Perhaps the biggest issue with Ghost Recon Breakpoint, at least during the beta, is just how many steps forward it takes while staying rooted in the same place. The story-telling is vastly improved over the original game but the overall plot and characters are still fairly one note. Some of the dialogue and reactions from characters like Schulz can be odd, to say the least. There are some positive performances here from the likes of Josiah Hill and Cole D. Walker, the latter helped by Jon Bernthal’s cold-blooded charisma.

Meanwhile, while the open world exploration is helped by the addition of investigations and more nuanced side quests, many of the typical Ubisoft tropes remain. You’ll find points of interest with prisoners who need to be rescued and escorted back, outposts to assault, loot chests to scrounge through and civilians to interrogate for information. It’s not terrible – heck, when you’re taking a detour every now and again while playing the main quest, they provide nice distractions. However, even with how its structured, this is still a Ubisoft open world at its heart. There’s a lot to see and it all looks fairly gorgeous even if you’re running at High settings but much of it will be familiar.

In terms of bugs, I didn’t experience too much by way of animation glitches. At least one bug caused me to restart the game because it prevented item switching or interacting with anything, including a target I had to interrogate. During one conversation, the visuals became very blurry – whether this was a resolution issue or a result of erratic sharpening is hard to say. Performance was otherwise fairly smooth and I didn’t experience anything by way of massive frame drops, hitching or pop-in.

While shooting is solid, movement feels a bit delayed when trying to immediately go prone. The camera felt too close to my character, which isn’t too problematic while shooting but feels awkward when navigating the environment or my immediate surroundings. The vehicle movement is also very erratic, feeling solid while on a motorcycle but way too slide-heavy when using a dune buggy.

"As a whole, the beta feels like it needed more polish. What’s there is fun to play even if it doesn’t necessarily break new ground."

The load-out screen seems like it’s trying to ape Destiny and while I see what it’s going for, I feel like it could be tweaked to be more intuitive. I also can’t wait for being able to disable the constant “Join/Matchmake With Other Players” option that’s present in the top right. If there was an option to disable it, I couldn’t find it. Otherwise, the ability to pin certain objectives on the top left of the screen and hide them dynamically felt nice and there’s a decent amount of customization in terms of notifications for tutorials, objectives and whatnot.

I didn’t play much of PvP but after one long round of Elimination on a large open map, I felt like I had my fill for a long time. Perhaps there’s some appeal to posting up, spotting enemies with drones (which are items that have to be found on the map) and sneaking around. I did feel like the weapons and abilities were fairly well balanced even if the Adrenaline Shot may need to be slightly toned down in terms of Ultimate Charge provided. But again, not too much time spent to really comment on balance.

As a whole, the beta feels like it needs more polish. What’s there is fun to play even if it doesn’t necessarily break new ground. But what warrants major concern is its always-online nature, no doubt because of the social aspects. If there are server problems – like what occurred when the beta launched – then players simply can’t access the game. This is a real bummer when you consider that Wildlands can be played offline. Hopefully Ubisoft irons these issues out – Ghost Recon Breakpoint is out on October 4th for Xbox One, PS4 and PC. Despite some hiccups and nuisances here and there, I’m looking forward to seeing it evolve and how the inevitable showdown with Walker will play out.
