2007 – S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Shadow of Chernobyl
With all enemies and indigenous creatures of Chernobyl working to their own unscripted routines, S.T.A.L.K.E.R was a beautifully replayable and immersive title.
2008 – Left 4 Dead
Left 4 Dead didn’t have the most intelligent of enemies, but the AI director made every encounter a tense one. With control of enemy and item spawn and music cues, the director really put the squeeze on the player a every opportunity.
2009 – Killzone 2
Killzone 2 had a great AI, not as good as say, Halo 3 or Halo Reach, but it is definitely up there with the best. The enemies flank you well, charge at you with unrelenting force until you go down. It’s not complicated at all, but they are damn aggressive.
2010 – Halo: Reach
Halo Reach’s AI is terrific, as you’d expect from the franchise. The Elites move with clinical precision, dodging your attacks and flanking you, and it’s not something that is fun to face in the legendary difficulty. However, it is challenging and if you want to play a game with solid AI, look no further.
2011 – Crysis 2
Crysis 2’s Alien AI is the best in the business. If you play a lot of Halo, they will remind you of the Elites. The game doesn’t feature a lot of open level design so it may result in some minor path finding issues. However, increase the difficulty and you have a massive challenge in your hands.
