Mass Effect 3
Mass Effect 3 is a wonderful game- the controversial ending aside. It’s sad, it gets to you, it’s heart-wrenching, it’s bursting with emotions. And this theme, “Leaving Earth” is the perfect way to describe what Mass Effect 3 is all about without actually saying anything. It conveys what you feel as you fly off a burning planet as millions of people burn in destructive fires, and as you watch a child getting ripped to shreds right in front of your eyes.
Halo: Reach
Halo has always been known for its impeccable music composition, and the ever so diligent Martin O’Donnell delivered another excellent soundtrack with Halo: Reach. And “Lone Wolf” is the perfect embodiment of everything Halo: Reach, which, in my view, has to be one of the greatest Halo stories ever told. And since I’m not a big fan of Halo 4’s soundtrack, I’ll hold on to my fond memories of Reach’s OST even more strongly.
Skyrim
Come on, you all knew this would be here. If I hadn’t included Skyrim’s “Dragonborn” for some completely baffling, inexplicable reason, I would have been raped and fired. That’s not even exaggeration. Because that’s how goddamn good and epic Skyrim’s main theme- hell, Skyrim itself- is. No one can deny its sheer, eargasmic quality.
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Skyward Sword itself may not have been the revolutionary, next Ocarina of Time we all wanted it to be (it still was a damn good game), there’s no denying the game, like all Zelda titles, has an amazing soundtrack, and a fantastic main theme. “Ballad of the Goddess” is a grand, sweeping theme that one can’t possibly hate on. Unless you’re a troll, of course. Yes, you.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Deus Ex: Human Revolution had the kind of techno/orchestral soundtrack hybrid that appeals to almost everybody. The main them, “Icarus” is an excellent tune too, and extremely humable. It’s not the most striking or upbeat theme you will come across, but it’s goddamn epic and probably one of the best musical themes for any game in the last few years.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 2
Yes, I know, it came out just now, but that doesn’t make the soundtrack or the main them any less awesome. Or even the game itself, for that matter, but that’s a whole another conversation. The main theme of Black Ops 2 perfectly fits the mood of the game, and what’s surprising about it is how un-Call of Duty-ish it is. It’s more reminiscent of Deus Ex, with a twinge of Hans Zimmer compositions. Basically, awesome + awesome = awesome.
