#1. THE LEGEND OF ZELDA: BREATH OF THE WILD

Only Nintendo could have pulled off something as bold, ingenious, majestic, and vast as Breath of the Wild, and only The Legend of Zelda could have inspired them to do something like this. It is still a little hard to believe that this was Nintendo’s first real crack at open world game design, because Breath of the Wild had such a thorough understanding of all the best qualities we look for in open world games. It was huge, diverse, and driven by web of interacting systems that gave rise to some truly excellent emergent gameplay and an experience defined by nearly endless ways to have fun. Hell, it even found a way to make the dreaded Ubisoft towers interesting. Best of all was the fact that in spite of being so completely unlike anything this series had ever done, it still felt like a natural evolution for the Zelda formula. And what’s even more exciting is that Nintendo can still take this template to eve greater heights with future games. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the best Zelda game ever made, the best game Nintendo have ever produced, and quite possibly even the greatest video game of all time.
