3. The train – Mario Galaxy

This one just comes out of nowhere. Tucked into a small crevice between two blocks is a small and inconspicuous train. The video says it all really. Maybe it’s an early reference to Zelda: Spirit Tracks. Speculation aside it is rather obscure and random, making it a perfect example of the Easter egg in all its glory.

2. The warp room – Super Mario Bros.

Granted this is more a secret than an Easter egg and, yes, literally everyone and their mum knows about this one. I couldn’t help but put it in regardless. When I think of little extras in Mario, this one always comes to mind, and its one of the big secrets from the original title that started it all. Check through the video if you aren’t familiar with the warp room but, for all you veterans out there, you need only close your eyes and think back.

1. The roof – Mario 64

Like the warp room, this is not really an Easter egg in the traditional sense. That said, there was so much rumour and speculation regarding the fabled roof of the castle that it seemed appropriate to leave this entry till last. With so many different ideas of what went down upon 100% completion, I’m glad we have the internet to prove exactly what waits for us on top of Peach’s castle. Classic stuff.

I’m sure there are some other great Easter eggs not included here. If I’ve missed out any classics let us know in the comments as always.
