Watch Dogs 2 appears to be a better game than the original, but it doesn’t look like people are interested in what the series has to say anymore. We’ve already seen the console versions of the game underperforming at retail upon launch, and it looks like the PC version is faring no better, either.
According to a report by GitHyp, Watch Dogs 2 has failed to break into the top 10 most played games on Steam, trailing behind Ubisoft’s own The Division, and even Rainbow Six: Siege, which is a year old game at this point. The game debuted with a peak of 18,113 players, which was already less than half of the original’s 47,000 players peak, and has since then fallen dramatically further, with a peak of only 9,604 players today.
Word of mouth on the game appears to have resuscitated the game a bit on consoles, so maybe it is possible that the PC community eventually ends up getting into Watch Dogs 2, as well- the game could have a long tail, after all. But for now, Watch Dogs 2 may stand as evidence that a whole lot of people have had enough of the excesses of AAA gaming.
