This console generation so far has by far been the bloodiest one, in terms of sheer fanboyism. Lines have been drawn since early and gamers have been moving back and forth crossing the line depending on their preferences. Well personally for me Playstation had been a preferred platform of choice up until 2005, when Microsoft made the all so important decision and released the Xbox 360, one full year ahead of PS3, meaning the start of healthy new competition.
This move by Microsoft proved to be a game changer in this all so monopolized gaming industry, where Sony was calling all the shots and Playstation was the ruling King. Now what this meant was that Xbox 360 got a one year head start over PS3, in the current console generation, providing ample time for the developers to perfect their know how with the Xbox 360 hardware.

Best Package?
It must be said here that the overall quality of Xbox 360 launch titles was rather underwhelming considering all the promises of never before seen next generation experience. But on the other hand the developers kept on working hard making all so publicized next gen experience a reality and it paid off by the time PS3 released. Microsoft managed to pull off a stunner in the shape of Gears of War, in comparison to which every PS3 launch title failed to impress, for the obvious reasons.
Xbox 360 taking the one year advantage kept on enjoying its success, even though PS3 did manage to produce some amazing AAA titles but there sales were never so promising when compared to Xbox 360 exclusives due to a larger console base. After all it’s all about the sales and profits in the end, in order to continue providing quality stuff and surviving in this tough industry.
Everyone was doubtful, even the hardcorest of the PS3 fans, up until 2009, when games like Killzone2, Infamous and all so important Uncharted 2 were released, which apparently set a benchmark for all the games to follow. No one can deny the quality of these titles, unmatched by any other console this year. But the sad part is that still these titles failed to manage those stellar sales enjoyed by the counterparts of the likes of Gears of War and Halo. Multiplatform titles also tend to sell better on Xbox 360 mainly due to superior online service provided by Xbox Live. Now all this could mean a disaster.

Survival of the Richest!
After all how long can Sony afford to keep on making such games of unmatched quality but managing such mediocre sales in the end. This does not sound financially viable either for Sony or the developers, which is apparent by seeing so many PS3 exclusives moving onto Xbox 360 this generation. Also price cuts forced by strong competition resulting in even lower profits, don’t help either. Xbox with such a strong financial backing by all those Microsoft $$$ will sure not back down by any challenge proposed by the competitors, anytime soon.
With PS3 just starting to make profits and only recently being able to utilize the full potential of PS3, while Microsoft realizing paling quality of its exclusives compared to PS3’s, so what if Microsoft again manages to pull off a next generation console ahead of Sony, this time with a possible even 2 year head start. A new generation console in the market already against PS3 could mean a possible disaster for Sony, already struggling with all those lackluster software sales. Also Microsoft charging for their online service means more profits while free PSN service doesn’t help Sony with any profits either. Now this means a possible danger for this all so healthy competition resulting in some of the most amazing games ever. With Microsoft working on Project Natal targeting all those casual gamers, Sony needs to stay in with the competition for their own survival. We here pray this doesn’t happen, and Sony-Microsoft continue to make quality games for the sake of competition, enjoying blockbuster sales equally thus creating a win-win situation for us- the gamers.

1. Go back and read the post i was replying to in regard to the 500gb BLU-RAY DISC lol. he – Jeff – specifically said that the PS3 can play 500gb blu-ray discs. i commented about that, you then jumped in and said “My PS3 has a 500GB HDD @ 7200 rpm. so theres no * maybe * in it”. you were talking about HDDs (for some reason) but we were talking about blu-ray discs. you were wrong.
2. there are NOT ‘8 or 9′ threads in the PS3 – there are 6. ive already covered this. there are 8 SPEs in the PS3s cell, but 1 of them is made redundant – cant be used – during manufacturing, and another is reserved permanently for the OS. that leaves 6 single threaded SPEs for developers. wow, thats the same amount as in the 360! and they run at the same speed too! so again, youre wrong on that one.
3. the 360 can make games look as good as uncharted 2 no worries. gears 2 is the first example, alan wake is the second, splinter cell conviction is the third.

@ joe
You said..
( 1. regarding the 500gb blu-ray disc: i dont care if your PS3 has a 500gb HDD in it, thats not whats in discussion. * you said that the PS3 CAN read 500gb BLU-RAY discs. * this has NOT been confirmed, and there are no 500gb blu-ray discs released yet anyway, so its completely unknown. this has NOTHING to do with the size of the HDD installed in your PS3 lol. )
I then said in reply..
So Joe, WHERE did I say that the PS3 can read 500gb Blu-Ray Disc’s ? Because i didn’t say such things as other people can also see that i didn’t say this. ?
1 = So joe you did say that i said a PS3 could read then 500gb B-Ray disc. You was wrong. As It was ( jeff ) that said this.
Now the reason i said this..( “My PS3 has a 500GB HDD @ 7200 rpm. so theres no * maybe * in it”. ) was to show that a PS3 CAN use up to a 500GB HDD. And the reason i said * no maybe in it* is only to point out that it is true, and not just a hear say. So cutting a long story short, the PS3 owners wouldn’t need a 500GB B-Ray disc as the HDD’s can do the same thing, ( meaning space ) if ever needed.
Now the 360 might need to have mandatory hard drive installs in 2010. Reason being is due to insufficient Disc Space.
( See why i posted the above = (((( PS3 owners wouldn’t need a 500GB B-Ray disc as the HDD’s can do the same thing, ( meaning space ) if ever needed ))))
Heres the link to explain the 360 and the 2010 mandatory installs..
http://www.n4g.com/xbox360/News-423496.aspx
2 = SPE’s.. Joe i am not wrong about the threads in 360 or PS3. Heres facts for you then as you don’t seem to see logic…
Cell BE processor may be allowed to pass the fabrication test if 7 out of 8 SPEs are good. Even if all 8 SPEs are good on a Cell BE, known as an “all good” sample, it may be desirable still to disable one of the 8 SPES, so that all shipped Cell BEs for a given product have 7 working SPEs, leaving one SPE redundant.
In addition, disabling one SPE, even though it is not faulty, of an application not requiring a full complement of SPEs, should reduce power consumption in the application to help achieve performance goals.
In an all-good sample, all SPEs are fully-functional, and thus the redundant SPE has a functional logic processor (SPU) and functional memory (local store). In a 7-of-8 sample, 7 of the SPEs are fully functional, and one SPE is faulty. ((( The faulty SPE may be defective for numerous reasons, and depending on the circumstances, part of the SPE nonetheless may be functional, resulting in a partially-functional SPE. )))
((( Although the SPU of a bad SPE may fail, its local store nonetheless may function, known as a “logic-fail SPE.” ))) Once part of a system, the BE is connected to a shared memory (XDRAM), and the shared memory chips that are connected to BEs heretofore have needed to be defect-free.
Note that the relationship between cores and threads is a common source of confusion. The PPE core is dual threaded and manifests in software as two independent threads of execution ((( * while each active SPE manifests as a single thread. * )))
((( In the PlayStation 3 configuration as described by Sony, the Cell processor provides nine independent threads of execution. ))) = (( 6 threads in 360 & 9 threads in PS3 ))
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_(microprocessor)
http://www.blachford.info/computer/Cell/Cell4_v2.html
So is that…. 2 threads from the 1 PPE, and 1 thread x 7 SPE’s (( 1 SPE being disabled )) which = 9 threads. ?? I think you will find that is correct.
So as shown above, even when the 8th SPE has been disabled it can still could be functional, resulting in a partially-functional SPE. But 7 working SPE’s and 1 PPE = 9 Threads in total.
3 = Joe, i really hope you are joking with me now ? I like our debate, it’s quite good so far. But the reason i asked if your joking about the 360 making games like Uncharted 2 is that you think Gears Of War 2 can look as good as that PS3 game.?
Joe, i am a level 65 on GOW2, i play it all the time online with my mates, i’m missing about 4 achievements in total. But uncharted 2 BLOWS them graphics out the water. I’m being honest as an owner of both consoles, Uncharted 2 IS much better looking than GOW 2, and playing online is also much better than GOW 2. Joe in my opinion you haven’t even played Uncharted 2, and have only seen reviews / videos of the game. The reason i say that is this, if you did play it, you would release that GOW2 looks Dull / and lifeless to Uncharted 2. In fact GOW2 looks colour less in comparsion.
I have given a link in my older posts explaining the ( X-Engine ) for the 360. Until MS uses this, it has been said that games like Uncharted 2 and Killzone 2 can not be made on the 360. But with the X-Engine Killzone 2 graphics can be done, as X-Engine adds MORE Ram which will be needed for them extra graphics. And this could be why the mandatory Hard Drive Installs are coming to the 360 in 2010.
Also until the other games come out, that is only guess work that they will be as good looking than Uncharted 2.

1. you said the PS3 can have a 500gb HDD – noone was even talking about that, but you suddenly brought it up like it was proving some point?
and a giant LOL at you thinking that having a 500gb HDD is the SAME as having a 500gb storage medium for games for that console hahahahahaha. by your logic, since my 360 has a 120gb HDD, thats the same as having 120gb DVDs? having 500gb on your HDD means NOTHING in regards to how much data can be stored on the physical media that the game comes on.
2. only SIX (6) of the SPEs in the PS3s cell are available to developers. 6. there can NEVER be 7, or 8, SPEs used by developers. NEVER.
the PPE – glad you brought that up, because it once again proves that you have no idea. yes, the PPE has 2 threads – but what is the PPEs job? to split up code and pass it out to all the SPEs, then put it all back together. from your very own link, it says this about the PPE:
“The PPE is the Power Architecture based, two-way multithreaded core acting as the controller for the eight SPEs, which handle most of the computational workload.”
its like a software developer company that has 6 employees – 1 is the boss, 5 are programmers. now the boss can do 1 thing – tell his employees what to do. the 5 programmers can only do 1 thing at a time, program. this means that while there are 6 ‘threads’ going on at any given time, only 5 of them are actually doing programming. the boss is just splitting up the work, never actually doing any of the work that his programmers are doing.
this is how the PPE and SPEs work. the PPE splits up the work for the SPEs. since there are 6 SPEs, there are only 6 thread available to the developers, as the PPE just tells the SPEs what to do.
so AGAIN – the 360 has 6 threads, the PS3 has 6 threads.
you do NOT own a 360, i guarantee that. what is your gamertag?
Uncharted 2 is just more of the same Uncharted 1. the most linear gameplay you could ever get, underwhelming graphics – have they ever heard of anti-aliasing? obviously not – and clunky controls. the cutscenes and acting however, are absolutely amazing. also, now youre saying that graphical quality is all about colour?! hahahahaha what an idiot. so because uncharted is set in colourful places, it automatically has better graphics? you truly are a moron.
the only people saying that the 360 cant have graphics like uncharted 2 or killzone 2 are people like yourself who dont have a 360, have never played a 360, and blindly support sony.
oh and there are NO mandatory installs for the 360.
youre a complete moron, and the sooner you shut up the better. the fact that you STILL wont admit youre wrong about the Cell and how many processing threads it has speaks volumes. i bet you also still believe the 360 cant do native 1080p, and that the PS3 is capable of twin native 1080p like sony said it would be lol.

i toatally agree. ps3 fanboys cant accept the fact that xbox 360 is better. sony released the product late so they obviously had chance to improve their system, and what did they do ? 512 ram LOL..

Hey, does Microsoft or Sony pay you guys for all the research and arguing you do as fanboys? Cos you guys take this war thing very seriously. I just want to know this one thing, what happens when your console of choice wins the war? What are you getting outta all this nonsense?

Wheres the LINKS joe to all your proof that the PS3 only has 6 threads and not 9 threads. Reason is that the PS3 HAS GOT 9 THREADS in the console, even if it doesn’t use all of them..?

i own both consoles unlike LBDz and McFail. i work as a software engineer, so its my job to know all these things.
i get awesome games out of the console war, as i can play every single game that comes out on every format. people like LBDz and McFail though, they cant.

Sony need to improve their online gaming experience. Their offering pales in comparison to the 360. I would rather pay for a good service than get a second-rate service for free. Online is important to gamers but Sony seems unable to grasp this.

blah blah sales. here’s what i remember about the 360 release date: red ring of death and the hilarity that ensued. sure they got the console out, but mine became a paperweight. people also like to talk about the price tag of the 360, but if you like to play online you’ll end up spending quite a bit more than the cost of a PS3. besides that, it’s nice to be able to buy one machine to do all my entertainment work.
