Orcs Must Die: Unchained

Ensemble Studios used to be at the top of the world, back when they were making Age of Empires games- they were the standard bearers of the real time strategy genre, and each of their new releases induced a paradigm shift for strategy games.

Then Microsoft went ahead and shuttered Ensemble, and some of those fine folks went on to make Robot Entertainment, a studio that created Orcs Must Die. While Orcs Must Die is not the milestone game that Age of Empires was, it is, nonetheless, an extremely fun one. It is also, interestingly enough, a PS4 console exclusive.

When we got the chance to sit down with Chris Rippy, VP of Production at Robot Entertainment, we decided to ask him why this is the case. Was an Xbox One version ever even considered?

“No,” Rippy said, “It’s just not on our radar right now. We have a really great relationship with Sony. They were really excited to have the title on there. That’s kind of the size of our studio- we can focus on only a couple things at once, and this is just a great world for us to live in.”

Which is fair, I suppose. This kind of thing happens all the time in the industry, especially with smaller developers. Plus, hey, I’d be a bit wary of working with Microsoft again too, if I were Robot.

what a stupid article, you dont know why they closed the studio, you dont know the details from a business point of view. The last real AoE game came out in 2005, and took years just to hit the 2 million sales mark. Maybe he could just report the facts for once, instead of pandering to sony fanboys, and looking like an idiot.

    • d0x360

They closed it because it was losing 10’s of millions of dollars per year and they couldn’t finish their last 2 games without help and extra budget.

ROFL you would be wary of working if working with MS because they closed a studio you used to work at…A studio that was losing them 10’s of millions of dollars a year….

I guess you would have kept the stupid open because profits are for idiots…Then again why does this website have 4 million incredibly obtrusive and on more than one occasion ads serving malware?

    • Luke Skywalker

As long as they have obtrusive ads then I will always obtrusivly block them: adblock

  • Rafoca

Yeah! No Xbox version, just like Furi and Rime, right????

    • Luke Skywalker

Aren’t furi and rime heading to the xbox?

    • Rafoca

The first two Orcs Must Die games are on the XBox 360. Pretty sure they will be B/C for on the XB1 if they aren’t already. Don’t think XBox fans are going to miss this games at all. When they are ready, Robot Ent. will port it to the XB1. Not a big deal.

The XBone is a damn joke of a platform to work on. Already selling less than half of what PS4’s have sold it’s no wonder smaller devs are going to cut their losses and deal with Sony instead. The XBone is weak in all aspects.
