Witcher 3

The Witcher 3 got shown earlier this weekend, and while it looked good, fans with sharp and discerning eyes (especially those who have been burned by too many games with fantastic debuts being downgraded visually before release) figured that it was looking worse than it should be. In other words, they are now alleging that the game has been downgraded.

CD Projekt RED has promptly responded to all of these criticisms:

“I believe some explanation is required here. Unfortunately this time we’ve encountered some horrible YouTube compression problems. At this very moment we are working on fixing this and will upload another version of the trailer as soon as we can. It will present much higher quality. I want to assure you that there will be no downgrade – I see this game every day – it looks stunning.”

In case you want to see a higher quality version of that trailer, in full 1080p, you can see it here.

How about this; let’s archive a list of studios who DOESN’T downgrade their games.

  • “”If the consoles are not involved there is no Witcher 3 as it is,”
Iwinski said. “We can lay it out that simply. We just cannot afford it,
because consoles allow us to go higher in terms of the possible or
achievable sales; have a higher budget for the game, and invest it all
into developing this huge, gigantic world.”

    “Commonly referred to
as a “vertical slice”, these snippets of gameplay are able to run at a
very high fidelity simply because that’s what they’re designed to do.
Once the rest of the game is added around this, however, and the systems
have to contend with an entire open-world to keep running, it becomes
    much harder to do. ”

Two best things they could have said. At the
end of the day, the game still looks great and the graphics are not the
highlight of this game. Yes it’s disappointing. But whether or not
the graphics are what they showed in 2013 should not make this game more
or less enjoyable. The world and what’s in it are the treat, not the
    graphics.
