It wouldn’t be a Sony first party game for the PlayStation 4 if it didn’t get delayed at least once. But Renka Schedule is currently reporting (via NeoGAF) that Gravity Rush 2 may be delayed to January 19, at least in Japan. Given that its current release date puts it squarely against big name games such as Pokemon Sun/Moon and Final Fantasy 15, this is probably the best move for the already niche game to secure at least some sales.
As of right now, this is only a rumor, of course, and even then, it only addresses the Japanese release, not the European and North American ones. It is possible that the release date in the west will not be moved, simply because SIEA and SIEE don’t really care much about how Gravity Rush 2 performs on the market.
That said, it’s probably for the best to get Gravity Rush 2 out of the Holiday season, even in the west- as of right now, it would be going up against Watch Dogs, Pokemon, Battlefield, Gears of War, Mafia, and Sony’s own The Last Guardian. Gravity Rush 2 is a sequel to a niche PS Vita game, and it’s unlikely to do that well at retail at the best of times. It’ll probably bum a lot of fans out- but in the long run, this would be a short delay, and it might mean the difference between failure and… well, relative success, for this game’s commercial prospects.
