It’s Foolish To Chase This Small Slice of 4K Market, Says Pachter On PS4 Pro’s Lack Of Native 4K

Pachter believes the 4K market isn’t worth chasing.

ps4-pro

The PS4 Pro will definitely be unable to run games in native 4K resolution most of the time- it’s simply not powerful enough to do so for modern high-end AAA games. Microsoft’s Scorpio, meanwhile, professes to deliver true 4K gaming, when it launches next year.

So did Sony make a mistake here? Did they rush out the system to deliver a half hearted half step solution that will be obsolete within the year? Should they have waited an additional year and taken the time to deliver a true 4K system? This was the question we decided to ask Michael Pachter, well known analyst, when we had the chance to talk to him. According to him, the PS4 Pro’s lack of native 4K won’t matter much in the long run.

“4K penetration isn’t that great. An in the US, it’s probably about 5% of households,” he said. “And 4KTVs are still a bit too expensive. I literally just bought a TV, our second room television, and I had a choice between a 55inch Samsung curved 1080p TV for $700, and the same TV in UHD for $1100. And I thought about it, and I realized, it’s not worth an additional $400. There’s no programming for 4K. There’s no broadcast television. I can watch Netflix in 4K, and play games when I get my Scorpio in a year, but do I want a TV for that now? And the answer is, no, I don’t. I can afford it, and I didn’t do it. So I think it’s foolish to chase this small slice of the market. I do know that these tech enthusiasts who are into super high tech, and early adopters, are all drooling about it, and they really want 4K native resolution on their games. But I think that Sony are a mass market consumer electronic manufacturer, and they are going after the biggest slice of the market, which is 1080p.”

I’m not sure I can agree with him on this one- after all, this was the argument made against HDTVs in the first place, back when Nintendo forwent HD with the Wii. It was short sighted then, and it may yet be short sighted now. I do think Sony, being a tech oriented company, should have aimed for something more high end.

Someone please explain the relevance of this Patcher guy in the gaming arena?

    • Hvd

to say dumb things and make you mad..thats all he is good for…lmao

    • efnet

      no one really knows lol

    • LordCancer Kain

he is business analyst and casual gamer that had a show on gametrailers. the problem is basically he is a math guy that says sony is wasting time, money, energy because only 5% of us households have 4k tvs and then he does some more maths and says only 20% of those people are gamers.

hes purely a numbers guy so that is his point of view. you know while this may be a business there is more too it than just numbers. i am buying ps4 pro for sata 3.0 and better 1080p graphics.

    • BillyHoWCR

Because he makes outlandish remarks that at times feeds the trolls on both side of the fanboy base.

  • Eliezer Barreto

loll this guy is nuts, first ps4 pro has 7 games confirmed 4k native until now. second even at 1800p you can use that kind of resolution on a 1080p tv son wtfff he is talking about.

    • Psionicinversion

last gen games dont count like Last of Us, should be looking towards games like uncharted 4

    • LordCancer Kain

why doesn’t last of us count? it was amazing on ps3 and looked and played better on ps4! i dont imagine they will improve much at 1080p but it is a great game that i will probably play a few more times. if monitors had hdr i would buy a 4k monitor and play it again.

    • Psionicinversion

Because it’s the same as me loading up a game which is designed for weak last gen systems then going hey I can play this 4k ultra 60fps on a 290.

Or like hey I can load up command and conquer from 20 years ago and play it at 8k. It’s not representative of what current games are like

    • LordCancer Kain

why do you care either way? like it is really important to you. i literally couldn’t care less about 4k native or otherwise, they should detach HDR from the 4k gimmick. consoles should be upgraded more often and scaling tricks were never an issue until snobs like you made native resolution some kind of thing. no one had problems playing halo in 540p on there 1080p tele but now you its not native 4k snobs wont shut up as if 4k makes a games mechanics or stories better when the only actual visual improvement in my opinion is hdr which isnt even available on your over priced sync monitors. i also didnt know you had an 8k monitor…that must be incredible playing all that 4k content in 8k reso.

I’m looking forward to it too, it’ll be just like when Xgimps insisted DirectX 12 would blow away the PS4. A lot of Xgimps are going to feel very stupid – but just like with DX12, they won’t have the guts to accept that they were wrong.

  • heavenshitman1

4K rez (or resolution in general) doesn’t really matter anyways. I’m not a Playstation or XBOX goer but to dismiss Scorpio as chasing a niche graphical market is over critical. The power of Scorpio can be used to enhance all other areas of visual fidelity and gameplay performance

  • Fear Monkey

Sony has been mostly silent on the PS Pro regarding PSVR, thats where I think it could really shine. I would care more about that then anything else. if it can run the games at higher resolutions with much less jaggies and even improved graphics, its far worth it to me. I dont have a 4k TV but im getting the Pro.

Looking forward to Scorpio buts thats a year off and we have no idea on price. By that time, the pro could sell for much less. Sony’s going to be aggressive on pricing against the Scorpio, that is something to consider even if it cannot compare to its specs. I’ll get a Scorpio but not expecting it to be cheap.

  • LordCancer Kain

I don’t have 4k and I am buying a ps4 pro for improved graphics and frame rates at 1080p and sata 3.0 and an ssd. 4k displays are premature with iffy hdr implementation not fully supported and pc monitors not supporting hdr at all. i wouldn’t buy a display right now because even $3-4K doesn’t buy full hdr. my primary regret is that i likely wont be able to use hdr until ps5 because i wont waste my money on the current crop of partial implemented hdr monitors.

i still think sony needs to add usb storage, i put a 750GB wd black drive in my ps4 and i currently have over 32GB free and i am unable to download any game updates without deleting something.

pachter is an idiot, i mean i know he is an analyst and they do what they do but he is so one sided in his view. sony has to offer mid cycle upgrades or phones become more powerful and i can not endure another 8 year console cycle.

4k is whatever, hdr is a major upgrade if you buy the right display, but lets be clear the ps4 wasn’t doing high end 1080p 60fps anyway maybe the ps4 pro does that a little better. i think it is a mistake to limit multiplayer games if it only runs at 30fps on ps4 but honestly i don’t think 60fps would make playing a pos game like battlefield 1 any better.

scorpio isn’t doing native 4k either anyone who believes this…it doesn’t matter anyway, consoles do not need to be native, they have been doing scaling tricks and no one cared until the master race convinced you it was a thing but those people steal games and complain that they only get 2nd rate console ports because developers wont make games dedicated to their girlfriend-titan-gpu’s.

    • theduckofdeath

Yes, I have been putting off buying a 4K TV set for a couple years, and recently started researching then with earnest. I tell you — it is more annoying than shopping for PC monitors. You simply can’t get the stats you want. My first intent was to go OLED.

Peak brightness, input lag, HDR encoding standard support, tone mapping, price vs screen size…all these factors begin to impede you. LED LCD has other concerns and not always the best input lag, either. Finding the right cocktail of features in a set is tough.

For a computer monitor, I went with the ASUS MG279Q last year. An expensive unit, sure, but it has Freesync 38-90, IPS, 2560*1440, 27″.

    • LordCancer Kain

i like asus monitors, do you connect any consoles to that 1440p monitor? i was concerned about how it would act with 1080p output seeing sony had issues with ps3 resolutions. i have an asus 27 MX279 i use with my ps4 and a benq rl2455 i use with my pc. i also have a midrange vizio 50″ 1080p while it has decent input lag and refresh rate, i prefer to game on monitors.

i want to upgrade to three 27″ or larger monitors but find i am frustrated by the current crop of monitors with no hdr and i really hate the idea of pairing gpu and monitor, nvidia and amd need to stop that nonsense.

the problem is there simply isn’t a monitor worth purchasing and replacing what i have at the moment, my asus works great and i don’t care about 4k especially without hdr and the smallest hdr hdtvs are 43″…i am not being served by the current options.

i thought about buying another MX279 but at the time i bought it i wasn’t concerned with mounting it and it doesn’t have visa mounts. what i would like to do is mount three monitors together one for my ps4, pc, and a dedicated netflix screen : )

i would like to match all the monitors but 4k without hdr is pointless and while i build and casually game on pc, i dont really feel spending 4k kind of money on gpu is what i want to do. so then im looking maybe 1440p for pc, 1080p netflix, 4k hdr playstation…i dunno.

i am wondering if i am waiting another year or two before better options are available but hdr fully implemented is kind of a huge deal, i want that. i am in a holding pattern until then.

    • theduckofdeath

I haven’t connected any consoles to the 1440 monitor; I have a 1080p monitor that is sometimes used for consoles. That is something I could test out. The display may get spread full screen when feeding 1080p to the 1440 monitor. Sometimes a PC game will default to 1920×1080 — it doesn’t look terrible, but you know something looks wrong.

We are probably better off waiting another year for 4K HDR TVs. The temptation to take the plunge is growing, though. The deficiencies in features and HDR performance is reason enough to wait a bit longer.

    • Danny MacGurk

Sorry but you are a complete moron. Who likes the sound of his own voice. You are a loser

    • Tomaterrrx

      Someone’s salty

    • BillyHoWCR

Maybe you didn’t notice a few articles on NBA 2K17 and mention of 4K with the Ps Pro? Basically it came down to the fact that even on a 1080P display 4K can present a better looking picture. (yes even I doubted the claims but supposedly developers came down with some kind of proof of this?)

So with that in mind if 4K native gaming is going to be a big thing for Scorpio and not as big a thing for PS Pro then why wouldn’t you choose Scorpio if in fact the so called 4K native will still push down a better picture for your 1080P display?

Just saying… developers are claiming even a difference for those playing on 1080P with games that push 4K resolutions. So if that is fact then it kind of leans towards even those that don’t have a 4K setup and just looking for best graphics with current setup they do have.

    • LordCancer Kain

it really is not an either or situation, i didn’t switch from xbox 360 to playstation 4 because ps4 was more powerful than xbox one, i switched because sony is focused on making games and many of the games i like disgaea, tales of, or other japanese or niche oriented games like berserk have never found an audience on xbox. blue dragon, lost odyssey, and tales of vesperia were great but they didn’t sale well and microsoft didn’t think growing that audience was worth continued investment. fortunately now with xbox games on windows i can play the occasional exclusive like recore i am interested on my pc which can be as powerful as i want to be.

i am far more interested in nintendo switch, i haven’t played a zelda game since windwaker on gamecube, the wii and motion controls along with vr do not interest me and i won’t buy them.

i said i was getting ps4 pro for improved graphics at 1080p and sata 3.0 as i intended to finally put an ssd inside where as with ps4 it wasn’t worthwhile because because sata 2 is so slow.

supersampling is what i think you are talking about, here is a few quotes from devs below. unfortunately without a 4k display you will not be getting to see the big improvement in contrast, color and brightness you would get with HDR. i think i will wait for hdr monitors as i prefer to game on those over hdtv’s though.

“Van Beek explained that PS4 Pro supports supersampling on normal HDTVs, helping in removing shimmering and aliasing, and creating a much crisper image even on a normal 1080p screen. Hastings added that you get “a sense of the detail” and “temporal stability” that is hard to achieve at standard 1080p, because you’re packing more information in each pixel, and the image quality improves. It’s not the same thing as in actual 4K, but it’s a noticeable improvement and it makes a difference.

Gyrling explained that developers have access to information on what kind of TV is used, and they can use supersampling, or opt to crank up elements like ground clutter, making the world richer. There’s “definitely a benefit” whichever way developers decide to go.

According to Hastings, the additional CPU power also allows developers to add more actors or improve physics. Supersampling is the “easy way” to get a solid improvement, but developers can be more creative about it.”

Dude i dont need xbox live to play my xbox digital games, you should know that as PS, Xbox players can share games with 1 more person, that person can play the friend digital games without signing in on xbox live. But i think you are refering to those digital games in which xlive is needed to confirm the ownership of that game when using the share mode. If you can play PS4 games without signing in on PSN, good for you.

    • crazy_black_man-

Xbox live is down again. Your digital games don’t work. What a joke. Hilariousness!

    • Tomaterrrx

Just like PSN was down 4 days ago.’What a joke. Hilariousness!’

Seriously though. Both services are just as bad as each other in terms of stability and getting Ddosed every other month. I know. I know you’ve argued a million times before about this:’ oh PSN is better than XBL’ but it is not going to work now. And you know you’ve never won this argument as their is no ‘winner’.

Don’t get your fanboy ego get the better of you. Try being a decent person on the internet, yeah?

    • crazy_black_man-

LOL. You suckers will never learn. Unlike with Xbox Obe, when the PSN service goes down, the digital content still works without the online check-in requirement. You people are a part of the dumbest community in console gaming history. I’m really enjoying your suffering.

    • Tomaterrrx

Right… I guess that explains why the infinite warfare beta got extended twice. Oh wait, no it doesn’t.

Once agian your ego has gotten the better of you. No one likes this. You are the type of people that many gamers will think is the bane of console gaming. Unlike you, I can appreciate what both Sony and MS offer me to their full extent. It is only the ‘dumb’ ones who can’t see past this and confine themselves to one platform, defending it like they actually feel that they are doing something with their tragic lives. smh

    • crazy_black_man-

LOL. That was beautiful and eloquent and wonderfully spoken. But I’m still not quite moved by your subliminal begging. Enjoy the outtage buddy. Support whoever you like but remember that you get what you pay for.

    • Tomaterrrx

Judging buy your logic then XBL is better. I mean, I ‘get what I pay for’. And I pay more for XBL which by your logic means it’s better. Lol once again you stupidity is showing.

Where was the begging in that reply? Please, enlighten me oh wise fanboy!

    • crazy_black_man-

Do you get reimbursed for outtages too?

No. No you don’t. You just get to grab your ankles. And you like it.

    • Tomaterrrx

Lol you’re just so angry your stupid logic didn’t work out for you. It’s okay. You were never going to win this argument. Peace.

  • efnet

    lol that ps4 pro baby

  • berj79

This is the same guy who said console gaming will die in 2012 cause of the mobile gaming uprise? i didn’t see that happen lol.

Xgimp vermin back to being upset. By the time Shitpio turns up it’ll be far too late to make anyone care.

    • kreator

      You actually care!

  • Tomaterrrx

Sold my PS4 for this. Even though I won’t get the benefits for 4K I’ll still get better graphics/performance.

  • armyk

So they releasy Scorpio at roughly 6 months ahead when SONY will unviel PS5?

  • BillyHoWCR

Same thing had been said about Bluray, 1080P, and VR. First 2 being now almost minimum in a next Gen debate. The 3rd being a gamble that Sony is putting their attention to. 4K is a thing. just as was HD and Plasma TVs in their times. When we all went from our tube TVs to upgrade to each next version of TV we asked ourselves if it was worth it. And we always came to the point where the generation either moved on without us or we were a bit too early and felt we led the generation.

But to think that 4K is too small and not worth the effort to point your bow in that direction…? Well sorry but 4K will soon be the new 1080P. And not having it will be little different than the modern day 780P and 1080P debate.

  • Derceto

If this system was designed to last 1 year or so, Pachter may be right. 4K will be mainstream within a year or 2 however, and this thing will be a forgettable under performing system.

Who knows though. This “is” Sony of course. It’s not like they have any problem abandoning hardware on a whim. They’ll likely still have a PS5 to announce to compete with Scorpio shortly after. It’s sad we’re in the day now of “double dipping” in software, much less hardware now too.

  • Paul

Sony could’ve afforded to wait another year and release around the same time as Scorpio considering how well the PS4 is doing, it seem kind of desperate from Sony to release now mostly because the PS4 wasn’t good enough for VR, another year of development and prices coming down, they likely could’ve gone for native 4k at 30fps, after all, a RX480 can do native 4k at 30fps with a lot of games if you are careful with the visuals settings, Eurogamer tried that out a few months ago, in any case, if Scorpio is native 4k, they are going to milk that PR against Sony till the cows come home.
