100-Dragon\'s Lair (1983)

For some, Dragon's Lair was the epitome of coin-op goodness. For others, it was their first adventure game. However, it was also one of the best looking games of its time. Why? Because it introduced animated characters and backgrounds, with gameplay playing out like a cartoon. Now, with cel-shading, the technique appears amateurish and tedious, but for its time, it was revolutionary.

Say what you will about gameplay and fun factor determining a game’s worth, but where would it be without graphics? Graphics to draw a player in, graphics to create a realistic environment, graphics to properly interpret the story at hand – even functional graphics so we can just enjoy the damn game.
Take a look at the evolution of graphics in the past 30 years gaming, where we start from the best looking games of 1983 till reaching the most visually, awe-inspiring title of 2013.  Along with exploring games that had a high amount of visual fidelity, we also looked at titles that did something never seen before with their graphics, elevating gaming as an art form higher and paving the way for more innovations.
