The First HD Gaming Console

High Definition hit the planet only a few years ago with the arrival of Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. But more than a decade ago, Sega had proclaimed that Sega Genesis had “High Definition Graphics”. I wonder what Microsoft and Sony have to say about the same.

@Errrrr Actually, on a genesis, you have to wire in S-video manually by soldering to the CXA1145 chip and adding transistor amps.

Funny enough though the Saturn was the first with wide-screen support (16:9 in nights, bomerman) and the Dreamcast was the first with VGA (480p) and a built-in modem. Sega truly was ahead of their time. Only a handful of PS2 titles support 480p, whereas only a couple of dreamcast games do not.

I had every cartage for this game console and almost every gadget. I had the Sega master system adapter, the, 3D glasses, the gun and the Sega CD back then Nintendo was all the rage. Sega was way better. To me the Nintendo was closer to the Sega master system but most everybody swore by it (idiots). Funny thing, those same idiots are running things now.

If you mean SNES, then they weren’t idiots. It WAS better.

Originally before there were HD video specs, HD was defined as video with dimensions greater than standard television pixels. I’m guessing that the Genesis performed better than the prior video game system, so it was “HD.”

Im comvinced that the “next” generation will be described as SHD (Super High Def) or EDT (Extra Dimensional Telivision), then, in four years, you can all have this discussion again :D

The first “high def” broadcast was in the early 80′s. It was 620×480 resolution. Did you know that the NES was also digital?

i agree, sega has always been ahead of its time. the master system was out before the nes, the genisis was out befor the snes, the saturn was out before the ps1 and so on, sega cd was the first with cd drive gaming, s-video, also had the 4 meg ram cart which made the imports os sf vs marvel incredible! the nomad had portable color gaming and played genisis carts! was a little bulky. but i wish they were still here making consoles….sniff….

    let’s get some facts straight…
sega’s SG-1000 (which is before Mark3 and Master System) was released on July 15, 1983 in japan which is exactly the same day as nintendo’s Famicon (NES) was released. and famicon was more powerful than SG-1000.
for cd drive, PC-Engine has its CDROM a few years before Sega CD. Not to mention that the pce cdrom was a way greater success than the mega cd…
for modem, Famicom has its modem in 1983 way before sega has one…
although sega has its share of contributions to the game industry and Mega Drive (Genesis) was a great console at its time, it’s not really as ahead of its time as some may think…

S-Video does not put out higher resolution. It’s the same as composite but sharper detail since the chroma and luminance lines are split.

It doesn’t have anything to do with a universally set standard. High Definition changes with time. But Sega was cool when I was a little lad.

OMG, that’s right, the genesis proclaimed it right on their console! Too bad SEGA couldn’t stay in the hardware market, I loved their systems.
