The Surge Could Have Run In 4K and 30FPS On Xbox One Scorpio, Developers Say

Not even close to maxing out the PS4 Pro, either.

The PS4 Pro and the Xbox one Scorpio (especially) are pretty powerful systems- so powerful, that Frankfurt-based studio Deck13 Interactive’s upcoming science fiction take on the Dark Souls formula, The Surge, doesn’t even come close to tapping out all of the resources that they offer.

“We’ve already utilized half precision floating point arithmetics on the [PS4] Pro for a couple of shaders and the gain was clearly noticeable,” Deck13’s Benjamin Glatzel said in an interview with WCCFTech. “These optimizations were one of the many steps we had to undertake to break the 60 FPS mark in ‘Performance Mode’. We’re planning to improve upon that in the future as we are permanently improving our engine and we’re also pretty confident that we’re not remotely close to what the PS4 Pro can actually handle.”

But the PS4 Pro itself pales next to the Scorpio- something that even Deck13 realized during development. “Given the current state of our rendering backends and given the specs of the Scorpio, 4k @ 30 FPS might be really close. Sadly we didn’t have the chance to touch the Scorpio – yet.”

So yes, if you like high end performance and graphics on your consoles, the PS4 Pro and the Xbox one Scorpio especially are the way to go for you. The Surge will launch on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

    i dont think developers want to transition to dx12/vulkan that quickly because with dx11 and before most of the optimisations were done by the AMD and nvidia driver teams. with dx12 vulkan most of it has to be done by the dev just like consoles and sure amd and nvidia still need to release drivers for dx12/vulkan games but its minimal in nature as the whole point of it is to allow the devs to specifiy exactly where and what order stuff should do rather than allowing a driver to guess where it should be going.

    • lol…yeah I thought it can do 4K@60 easily on every game with room to spare!!

      I just hope the Scorpio is amazing and new and it changes my mind…but its MS…so its probably not going to be that impressive when it’s finally here. I’m sure there will be some great exclusives…in a year or two maybe, but since I have a PC with a 1080Ti I dont see any new XBWhatever makes sense for me anymore.

      Since I don’t ever use my XB1S console anymore I decided that I’m sticking with a PC and a PS4 Pro and maybe a Switch later…but that’s it. I don’t care how good its supposed to be but it better have some amazing exclusives that actually do run native 4K@60fps ( with HDR of course) that I can’t play on my PC or my PS4 before I even consider buying something else from MS.
