Watch Dogs Downgrade Happened Because Of Lack Of Information On PS4 and Xbox One- Ubisoft

‘Watch Dogs was revealed before anyone knew what the next gen consoles would be.’

Watch Dogs wet road

One of the most infamous instances of a game being announced with a gorgeous looking trailer, and the final game looking substantially worse than that, is Watch Dogs– announced at E3 2012 in a hell of a reveal, the final game’s graphics looked far worse than what the initial trailer for the game had suggested. The downgrade, and the controversy surrounding it, was so severe that people have been wary of all Ubisoft games ever since.

However, that issue will not be repeated with Watch Dogs 2, Ubisoft insists. In an interview with the Evening Standard, Dominic Guay, senior producer on the game, has discussed the reasons behind the downgrade on the first game, also explaining why something like that will not happen this time around.

“One thing to remember is that the first showing of Watch Dogs came in summer 2012, before anyone knew what the Next Gen of consoles and hardware would be,” Guay said. “We did our best at the time to predict what that would be and always were forward that this first showing was running on a very powerful PC.”

Guay then explained that the timing of the release of the new game ensured that that set of circumstances will not be repeated this time around.

“For Watch Dogs 2, we are in a much more predictable context. We have been developing the game on our target platforms from the beginning,” he said.

I can actually believe this- it’s a candid and very reasonable response about what happened, why it happened, and why it won’t happen again. I just hope that Ubisoft don’t disappoint with Watch Dogs 2, which launches on November 15 for PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

And why will Watch_Dogs 2 be downgraded?

    Really milking this one huh…wow.

Downgrades ALWAYS happen when you are starting a game right before a generational shift. Devs have to guess what specs will be 3-4 years before they are actually final.

If watch dogs was PC exclusive it wouldn’t have been downgraded but they had to have the game also run on consoles

The problem with this thinking is that it excuses and promotes developers to show and hype games to the public that are, at that time, completely fictitious. I think it’s a bit irresponsible to even show anything before you know what hardware you’re working with. Just keep your trap shut and wait until you have something REAL to show. I’m glad developers are getting called on this because it’s a practice that really shouldn’t be put into place to begin with. Not to mention the way that Ubi swore up and down up until mere weeks before the launch of the game that it would look way better than the worse looking trailers were showing. Which was a complete and utter lie.

While I agree ubi should have been more up front about the changes especially to the PC crowd I need to ask you a question.

You say its irresponsible for devs to show off games before they know the final spec? Do you realize that would mean we wouldn’t actually see a launch title until about 4-5 months before release of the console? Hardware changes and software changes to the SDK occur right up until the box is sent to manufacturing. SDK changes continue to occur until basically the console is no longer made and those changes can and do effect visual quality.

So we would be ore ordering consoles based on what? We can’t see any games…so that would be incredibly boring.

Instead people need to understand that since after the NES era its always been this way when a new console cycle begins and always will be this way otherwise they can’t show off the console or games until the console is 100% finished. That would give everyone a couple of months notice that a new console is coming out. That would be irresponsible. Instead people need to temper their expectations and understand launch titles and anything unveiled in the first wave of games isn’t going to look as good as the demo did. It just won’t.

Now ubi is most guilty of this. If you noticed crytek with Ryse was showing off and explaining changes and as development went on. People said hey that looks different and crytek would essentially tell them why they changed it.

That’s the model everyone should follow. Most devs do just fine with their predictions but ubi purposefully over promises even after consoles are out…never believe what you see from ubi. Its always running on a high end PC even if they say otherwise.

    Doomed to fail.

    • Marc Grierson

I doubt it. It will sell and sell well, it looks great.

    • xboxmaster

you know that watch dogs 1 was like the fastest selling ubisoft new ip and it sold like 8 millions +?

“Watch Dogs Downgrade Happened Because Of Lack Of Information On PS4 and Xbox One”. If i remember correctly, the PC version was downgraded as well…

    • Psionicinversion

yeah because they couldnt have it running on low settings on console and max settings on PC thats why

    • McToasty207

But interestingly a lot of the lighting files are just hidden in the code and there are plenty of mods that switch this back on making the game look much better. It’s like they wen’t to the effort and then at the last minute switched if off to make the console versions look like the poor mans version

  • James Turner

We promise not to do it again please buy our new game blah blah blah. No information was conveyed that I couldn’t have gleaned myself by simply sitting and thinking about it for 2 mins.

  • Yo Mama

BS. Then explain the downgrade of The Division.

  • FelixUnger

Yes they still screwed over the PC gamers because of the console crap boxes..

  • dapaintrain

If it was just watchdogs all would have been forgiven a long time ago but since then most ubi games have witnessed a downgrade.

The division downgraded in both scope, map size and graphics.

Ghost recon wildlands severely downgraded from reveal trailer to the latest gameplay trailer showing a meh game.

Far cry 4, the crew etc all downgrade victims

  • gordo100

That doesn’t explain every other ubi game receiving a downgrade far cry 4, far cry primal, assassins creed unity, assassins creed black flag, rainbow six the list go’s on its clear that it’s part of a marketing plan that ubi use to attract initial interest
