In summary, tessellation is the process of breaking down a polygon into a series of smaller triangles. Whilst this doesn't provide any obvious effects on its own, it creates more elaborate texture details when combined with displacement mapping techniques. Everything from dimples on facial animations to carvings and cracked rocks on a cliff face is vastly improved with the tessellation features of DX11.
