10 moments that freaked you out

3. Zombie dogs (Resident Evil)

The most frightening adversary in the old Resident Evil titles was quite easily the fixed camera angles. The inability to properly target and see your foe was truly nerve racking. Despite this, many of the enemies were so slow that this never became a problem. Except for one type of enemy. The dogs. With their speed and agility, they are some of the most annoying enemies you encounter in RE and the fact that they are the very reason you become locked in the mansion in the first place is just icing on the cake. Add in their shock entrance through the hallway windows and you have, what is arguably, the jumpiest moment in gaming to date. The guy in the video certainly sounds frightened, cheers to thelivegamerz for the footage.

2. The Romona scene (Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth)

Though rather archaic and backward in terms of gameplay, Call of Cthulhu is one of the most underrated horror titles ever made in terms of its ability to frighten. This whole list could’ve easily just included moments from this game, but the scene with Romona Waite truly epitomises the unseen horrors, terrifying flashbacks and fear of the unknown that made this game such a great scare. Just watch the video and you’ll see what I mean. Cheers to OniNeoxis for the upload.

1. Pyramid Head (Silent Hill 2)

A rather obvious call to make, but a necessary one all the same. Pyramid Head is just freaky as hell. His entrance sums this up best of all. Just think about. These horrible monsters are attacking you as you progress through Silent Hill and are generally a pretty frightening apparition of the subconscious. Then along comes a monster so much higher up the food chain that he’s just casually eating and raping these guys. That has got to be one scary mofo if he can pull a crazy stunt like that and not seem to break a sweat. And then he just keeps coming back. Then you finally get to wield the giant knife that he brandishes, only to have to now take on two Pyramid Heads at once. No horror is as great or as iconic as the special brand that Pyramid Head brews up in Silent Hill 2. Accept no imitations. Forget his awful cameo in the entirely unnecessary Silent Hill: Homecoming. Number 2 was where he started his reign of terror, and it has yet to come to an end. Thanks to doomsday440 for the clip.
