3. Team Fortress
Now one of the mainstays of Valve’s gaming entourage, Team Fortress began life as a humble Quake mod. Bringing the class based gameplay now so commonly used in the genre to the fore for the first time, Team Fortress had an undeniable charm that made it popular with gamers wanting a bit more strategy in their running and gunning antics. Team Fortress is also allegedly one of the first FPS games to incorporate head shots, again solidifying this mod’s significance
2. Garry’s Mod
Garry’s mod may not be as flashy as the others on this list, but it caters to everyone’s secret desire: The ability to just piss about in Valve’s Source engine. With Source being one of the first engine’s with properly good physics, Garry’s mod is a delight to experiment with. With no goal or objective, it is also a relaxing and often creative experience.
1. Counter Strike
Counter Strike is considered one of the greatest games ever made, and it all started as a Half-Life mod. CS’ biggest feature is the list of weaponry and equipment that players can purchase with cash earned in game. Pretty much every FPS now uses this model, though often on a larger scale with experience points being earned across multiple games. With such a powerful tool at its disposal, Counter Strike quickly became the most actively played Half-Life mod and, following Valve turning it into a full fledged title, it has since become one of the most highly praised shooters on the market.
With so many great PC game mods out there, we couldn’t possibly list them all. Let us know your personal favourites in the comments below.
