7. Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines unofficial patches
Don’t be deceived into thinking these are just mere patches. Unlike other mods on this list that improve and add to already established titles, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines almost requires this mod to be playable. I’m not saying it was a bad game before, far from it. Bloodlines is an engaging and highly inventive RPG, but it had some serious stability issues. This patch corrects all of that, letting you enjoy this fantastic game the way it was meant to be played.
6. Desert Combat
Desert Combat improved upon Battlefield 1942 so much, to the point where it is often considered a superior shooter to the game it is based on. With a completely new set of weapons, maps and vehicles, Desert Combat barely resembles the original game. What’s also interesting about Desert Combat is its setting in the first Gulf war, a conflict seldom touched on in gaming.
5. Capture the Flag
In terms of influence, this is one Quake mod to keep in mind. Every shooter under the sun has some kind of Capture the Flag (or other such named) objective mode. Though it was first introduced back in Rise of the Triad, it was a CTF Quake mod that first granted the mode mass popularity. Praise be to Zoid for his ingenuity, for without his CTF mod the FPS genre would be a very different place indeed.
4. Defence of the Ancients
One of the many mods that was so polished and subscribed to that Valve took the reigns and made a full game out of it, Defence of the Ancients took the core assets of Warcraft 3 and made it into a completely new experience. The multiplayer strategy RPG is one of the most popular mods ever, and for damn good reason. Its deep and unique brand of strategy is now a hallmark of many of the big gaming tournaments, and this is set to continue when Valve release DotA 2 later this year.
