Post-Apocalypse
Video game makers are obsessed with apocalypses. Mostly every game tasks you with saving the world from certain impending apocalypse, and there are only so many ways that you could cause an apocalypse to appear, right? Know what’s better, then? How about setting the video game AFTER the apocalypse, right? I mean, that’d be exciting! Or it would be… if every single game wasn’t visiting this setting. Ever since Fallout, the post apocalyptic wasteland has become a popular haunt for video games. We see it appear in modern shooters like Crysis 2 and Resistance, we see it appear in games like Halo and Gears of War, we see
it everywhere now. It’s getting on my nerves, since video game designers rarely bother to mix anything up, which is a shame, because the post apocalyptic setting can actually yield so much creativity if it is used probably. For instance, Nintendo once again did it right, with The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, which took the concept of a post apocalyptic world and ran away with it, making it its greatest strength. Unfortunately, however, barring these occasional sparks of brilliance, we\’re stuck with the generic post-apocalyptic wasteland that is undoubtedly among the most overused settings in video games ever.
