3. Crysis
Whenever we see new hardware gracing the market, the question always always seems to be: “Will it run Crysis?” Internet memes aside, there is good reason why Crysis is seen as such a potent graphical benchmark. The whole thing just looks bloody amazing and, whilst its sequel has pushed the limits of graphics further still, it’s the original Crysis that shows off water the best. With its island setting and fantastic ice effects later on, Crysis is all about realistic looking water.
2. Hydrophobia
The game’s called Hydrophobia, so naturally its water best look the part. Though there are other games with superior visuals on this list, Hydrophobia is special for being a downloadable title only via the Xbox Live Arcade. Yet, in spite of this, it is a beautiful title with some amazing water effects. The motion of the water is breathtakingly real, and easily trumps the water animations of many full priced games. Hydrophobia is a master-class in intense water effects on a reasonable budget.
1. Uncharted 2
Saw this one coming did you? Uncharted 2 is one of the best looking games ever made, so it makes sense its water effects will steal the show. Whether it’s in shallow marshes, ice caves, or swimming pools (that Marco Polo gag gets me every time) the water effects in Uncharted 2 are sharp; almost as sharp as the game’s wit. The way the water ebbs and flows and leaves damp stains on character models that later dry off. Absolutely priceless. Expect great things from the upcoming sequel.
