Non-linear Structure
Metro 2033 featured a few areas where you could shop for new weapons, but you never really got the feeling of a living breathing world within the Metro tunnels. There were a few open areas, but nothing that deviated from the classic linear path. Last Light looks a bit different though, with expansive Metro stations offering distractions and side quests for you to tackle at your leisure.
Even More Immersion
Artyom’s wrist watch became one of the most loved features of Metro 2033 as, when you’re wearing a gas mask to survive the polluted air of the surface, the watch is the only way to keep track of how long your mask filter has left. It really immersed the player in just how dangerous the world was, and lead to plenty of tense moments. It seems this feature is back, along with other immersion generating features such as having to wipe condensation and blood stains off of your gas mask during combat. Yikes.
Narrative Decisions
Those who played Metro 2033 will know that the game offered two very different endings based on subtle decisions made throughout the campaign. It’s likely that Last Light will operate a similar system, with the previews confirming this in a sense as well. We clearly see Artyom being offered the chance to go for lethal or non-lethal takedowns when sneaking up to an opponent. Why else would such a choice be offered if there was no moral choice system in place?
