10 Things Open World Games Are Still Doing Wrong

In spite of their well-earned popularity, open world games could still make meaningful improvements by cutting down on these prevalent annoyances.

This one feels particularly grating in open world games. The very point of these experiences is to let players loose in massive sandboxes with the freedom to do whatever they want, and however they want to do it, as long as it’s within the confines of the game’s mechanics and structure. But sometimes, even the best open world games end up underutilizing that strength by putting players in highly scripted and linear missions that demand that things are done in a very specific way. Rockstar’s games have been guilty of this quite often, where you’ll often fail a mission even if you go slightly outside the bounds of its heavily scripted nature, even though you should, by the game’s own logic, be able to do things differently from how the game prescribes it.
