There will be QTEs
It just wouldn’t be a Quantic Dream adventure without quick time events, now would it? To see them as standard QTEs is unfair though, as games like Heavy Rain and Fahrenheit turned this often maligned gameplay mechanic into art form. Rest assured, the gameplay hasn’t strayed too far from its routes, with Beyond looking surprisingly action packed in comparison to Cage’s previous titles.
Players will have “direct control”
Whilst quick time events aren’t going anywhere any time soon, David Cage has picked up the habit of referring regularly to the “direct control” players will have in Beyond: Two Souls. No idea on what this specifically refers to, but it’s likely to mean the driving sections and areas where you play Aiden where the game is not controlled entirely through button prompts and quick time events.
You can play as a ghost
So yeah, you get to play as Aiden, the mysterious spirit who follows Jodie throughout Beyond. As you might have hoped, this does mean that some of the game’s puzzles will involve possessing enemies and inanimate objects. Hopefully Quantic Dream will fully realise this mechanic, as it’s a cool idea that few games have ever successfully mastered.
A branching storyline
Just as in Heavy Rain, Beyond: Two Souls seems set to offer branching storylines based on what decisions the player makes. We may be lucky enough to get as many endings as Heavy Rain (which had a total of 26 endings) but, even without this absurd amount of endings, it will add to the player immersion significantly if players can have an impact on the story.
