The concept of playing online wasn’t a household item and the Xband was quite the risk at that time. It had monthly fee of $4.95 and allowed the user to connect to the service up to 50 times a month. However by March 16, 1997, people could only play within their local area code and by that time support for the device was dwindling, which eventually led to its demise.
