Adrian Shepard is just a soldier who nearly crosses paths with Gordon Freeman on several occasions. He obviously doesn’t receive the orders to eliminate the surviving scientist in Black Mesa, so he is a hero of sorts. He saves the day, the G-Man comes and puts Shepard in a Stasis environment just like he did with Freeman and the credits roll and the game ends, with no answers.
