Every once in a while, something happens in our industry- something big; something major. Something that makes people stop whatever they’re doing and pay attention to what they’re seeing unravel. Rumours about cancellations, reports about new consoles, fallouts between developers and their employees, fake teasers, leaked announcements- it can be any number of things that makes the entire industry stop. Here in this feature, we’re going to talk about fourteen such instances, fourteen times when something happened in the industry, a report or a rumour that made the entire industry stop and take notice, if only for a fleeting moment.

Just to make it clear, it doesn’t matter if these reports or rumours went on to be proved true or false- that is not the criteria for this feature. We’re simply talking about how momentous they were and how much traction they gathered with everyone. Without further ado, let’s begin.

NINTENDO NX FAKE CONTROLLER

Some time back, in 2016, when the Nintendo Switch had not even been officially announced yet and was only known as the NX, there were reports of leaked images that showed what the controller for the upcoming system to be like, and… it wasn’t at all what people were hoping for or expecting. It was essentially an oval tablet with only two analog sticks, one at each side, and no other buttons. Ridiculous online forensics that went into analysing the photos and deciphering tiny little details such as what studio it was who had inadvertently leaked the images, until finally it turned out that the mock up had been made by a random person with a 3D printer, and he’d had no idea that some images could cause so many people to lose their minds. So… yeah, that was a fun week.
