Edith Downes, his wife, and their son are forced into a life of poverty, while Mrs. Downes herself has to resort to degrading acts of depravity just to make sure she and her son can get by. The side questline involving her in the final chapters of the game is one of the most memorable stories of Red Dead Redemption 2, an arc of slight redemption for Arthur, and her personal story is truly heartbreaking.
