Flamelurker – Demons Souls – 2009
The Flamelurker appears deep within the Stonefang Tunnel in Demon’s Souls, and quintessentially the kind of Souls Boss that would go on to define the series later, with a totally fair challenge and a hidden weakness to magic that players would have to intuit if they wanted to emerge from the challenge alive. The arena itself is also against you, demanding that the player be aware of their surroundings, or they’ll burn in lava, or find themselves backed into a corner. Prepare to die, indeed.
