There’re moments in video games where when faced with certain death you calculate on-the-fly a solution to survival which seemed unfathomable mere seconds earlier. Shogun Showdown, a similarly turn-based combat game but with rogue-like elements, replicates those thrilling near-death moments with finesse. There’s real depth to the combat here too, with positioning and timing – like genuine samurai fights, perhaps – just as integral to scything your enemies as the attacks you choose. Shogun Showdown’s reviews are excellent, yet it seldom appears in the conversation for 2024’s best rogue-like.
