Backtracking to Old Areas
Again, Metroidvania games are a perfect example of why how and why this cliché can be great. You’re stronger than you were before so you can beat enemies with ease, and you get to explore new secret areas that you couldn’t before with your new abilities. Like many clichés on this list it can be annoying when done poorly, but when done well it’s another great tool in a developer’s toolbox.
