Resident Evil 4 was where the franchise started to truly drop its survival horror roots and veer more into action gameplay, but though RE4 is more action than horror, it is still incredibly tense. And that’s a different kind of horror. It builds up horror through its atmosphere, through the deranged Ganado, through its environments and art design, through the grinder it constantly puts you through with its combination of gruelling encounters and a relative lack of resources to tackle them with. No, it’s not classic survival horror. But RE4 constantly has you on the edge of your seat.
