6 Most Outspoken Game Developers In The Recent Years

David Jaffe (Eat Sleep Play)

Did you seriously think Jaffe would not be on this list? There’s so much that this guy has said that he probably should not have, so much that drove so many up the wall. And while we do think that it was rude of him, we have to admit that having the courage and the guts to say that in the open is admirable indeed… though we wouldn’t want him to say anything to us, of course (sniggers). We still get a kick out of every time we read some of his quotes.

Our favourite Jaffe quotes? There are too many. So we’ll post two:

“SO F***ING SICK of artsy fartsy in this industry. Get f***ing over yourselves bitches.

ARTY-FARTY = pretentious, dull, surface bullshit without really understanding the craft of game design or emotion/storytelling.”

To Joystiq:

“F*** you, guys. Go f*** yourselves. What other developer makes a f***ing change to a game when a review (IGN’s in this case) has a good, valid point and is willing to open the fucking code up at the risk of more bugs to make the game better? Amazing. But hey, you guys are great, you guys rock. I hope Kotaku f***ing puts your ass out of business, wanna be f***tards. And if you were actual journalists you would have read the motherf****ing quote I posted on NEOGAF where I said because of the two bugs we needed to fix (not because I was afraid of the bargain bin) we had a window of opp. to fix the magnet problem. Assholes… total f***ing assholes.”

Denis Dyack (Silicon Knights)

Shuns a popular gaming forum? Check. Gathers hate comments and heated response? Check. Gets banned from that forum? Check. What more do you need to do to be classified as an outspoken developer? In our books, this is more than enough. Some would say that he’s never done anything to back his arrogance, but to be honest, some of the games he’s made have been enjoyable, and, well, who doesn’t get a kick out of reading all his quotes?

Our favourite Denis Dyack quote:

“NeoGAF is considered to be the worst, and I would say is probably the worst forum. And so, you might as well pick the worst one. Why not? A lot of people would say, ‘Don’t post on a forum. Forums don’t have any affect.’ That post on the forum got picked up by almost every single major press site, and it did influence the press.”

Tomonobu Itagaki (Valhalla Game Studios)

Itagaki has been in a lot of controversies, some of which we’d rather not mention here. His quotes have been met with a lot of negative responses, he has gathered a lot of haters, and his name is almost synonymous with controversy now. And yes, most of the stuff he says is absolutely outrageous, and that is exactly why he’s on this list. Because he’s way too outspoken, maybe even more than all the others on this list, in his own way.

Our favourite Itagaki quote:

Devil May Cry games are not as the same league as Ninja Gaiden. I don’t want to play with Punchbags as enemies and will stand still even though you slashed their throats.
