The moment when Shepherd killed Ghost and Roach was the moment when we started hating him to the core, but initially, he also came across as an extremely badass villain. However, as the rest of the game progressed, we realized that he was evil just for the sake of it, and he had no real motivation or reason to back up his actions. And a tthrowing knife to the eye, while awesome to look at in a cutscene, was a rather stupid way to die.
