MAG
Zipper Interactive is often known as the ‘multiplayer specialist’ in the Sony first-party line-up. While they created an amazing franchise called SOCOM on the PS2, their latest effort SOCOM 4 was pretty mediocre. But they did innovate in the multiplayer space by creating MAG, or Massive Action Game, as they call it. Generic name aside, the multiplayer concepts were certainly not generic, as the unique USP of the game was the gigantic amount of players in each game. While the graphics and sound effects are nothing special, you could argue that it was beyond the capabilities of the PS3 to run the ambitious game at a good visual fidelity. There was an in-depth tier system, which went all the way to the top. Yes, you could send in an air strike anywhere in the battlefield or command an entire platoon. It should be also mentioned that the network code was pretty optimized inspite of supporting so many players, and thus, on the basis of pure innovation, this deserves a mention.
