Some Publishers actually wanted Obsidian to do a Kickstarter

No words...

How messed up can the video game industry be? It’s the job of the publisher to provide funding to the developers so that they can create the game, isn’t it? But Obsidian’s CEO revealed how cost conscious publishers can be.

As you know, Kickstarter has been pretty popular recently in helping developers get adequate funding, and it seems like this is finally going to be abused by publishers who don’t want to take a lot of risks.

Obsidian’s CEO Feargus Urquhart revealed on their Project Eternity Kickstarter page that some publishers actually contacted them and asked them to do a Kickstarter.

“We were actually contacted by some publishers over the last few months that wanted to use us to do a Kickstarter,” he wrote.

“I said to them “So, you want us to do a Kickstarter for, using our name, we then get the Kickstarter money to make the game, you then publish the game, but we then don’t get to keep the brand we make and we only get a portion of the profits” They said, “Yes”.”

Now I know reading this must make your blood boil, but this shows how a good thing can be exploited so easily. Obsidian’s Project Eternity was funded successfully in 1 day and is currently sitting at $1.6 million, so the potential of Kickstarter is no doubt incredible.
