Earlier we reported that Mists of Pandaria, the latest expansion pack for World of Warcraft, had sold poorly at retail. Well that’s exactly the reason why it didn’t sell poorly according to another analyst.
The previous analyst was wrong because he didn’t take digital sales into account. Brean Murray, Carrett & Co told Venturebeat “We think recent reports of weak retail sales for Mists of Pandaria may fail to reflect a channel shift toward a greater percentage of digital sales.”
“More than 1 million people bought premium subscriptions, which bundled a year-long subscription with a copy of Diablo III. We look for the premium subscribers to not only pick up the expansion but for a significant portion of them to download it through the Battle.net platform, which should offer high margin revenue.”
It looks like a logical explanation, really, Blizzard had made it easier to buy the game digitally as well.
