Splinter Cell dev: Market will shift from big budget AAA games

"Call-to-arms for smaller game creators."

Plenty of game studios have closed this gen, and one of the reasons for that is the rising game budgets which makes profit impossible if they game doesn’t manage to break even.

Sometimes publishers don’t give these developers another chance and the potential is not realised.

However, the industry may adapt and shift to a different style of making games where high production values and big budgets takes a back seat. It will still exist but not as we see this gen.

Patrick Redding, who is the director for Splinter Cell: Blacklist, said something similar during the Gamercamp festival in Toronto.

“The market as a whole is going to undergo a critical shift in priorities, a shift away from the absolute primacy of graphics and production values and content creation toward systemic depth,” he said (via GamesIndustry)

“This trend is going to trigger a reality check for developers like me who work on established franchises with a large succession of sequels, and it’s also going to be a call-to-arms for smaller game creators.”
