Why The New PS4 Controller Design Is A Worthy Successor To DualShock 3

Earlier today, Destructoid received a leaked image of the PlayStation 4 controller prototype. Now just a few minutes ago, we have come across a clearer picture of the new controller.

It seems that Sony have learned their lessons from the DualShock 3 controller. Judging closely, the new controller looks like a worthy successor to DualShock 3 in the following ways:

Longer Grips:

The DualShock 3 had a shorter grip but if you observe the new controller, Sony have implemented a longer grips this time around. It was always a running joke that the DS3 isn’t made for westerners in mind, but that was only due to the small shape of the controller. It was ergonomic and cleverly designed, although, not a massive leap over the DS2. With longer grips, Sony will completely eliminate complaints of the controller not being comfortable.

Analog Sticks:

The analog sticks now have circular depressions in them which I assume will result in to better grip. These are like the 360 analog sticks which have a concave top on the sticks. We are not saying Sony has gone after the 360 controller design, but such a stick design will go a long way in your thumbs not slipping during those vital moments in games.

The D-Pad:

Sony seems to have ditched the old D-Pad design and have gone with a style that resembles the PlayStation Vita. This is an absolutely great move by Sony, considering the PS Vita d-pad  just feels perfect to use. This is a prototype controller so the finish isn’t as perfect, but Sony should be revealing the entire package on February 20th.

It Is Wider:

Compared to DualShock 3, the new controller seems wider and for some reason lighter too. A wide controller presents a lot of advantages since it accommodates almost all type of people and based on this picture below, it looks really comfortable. The question here is the weight, and rumours are that it’s lighter. Combined with a wider frame and lighter weight, this could be the perfect controller designed yet.

An Ergonomic Shape:

The entire design seems to have that next-gen look and is ergonomic. Sony seems to have nailed the controller based on this image which shows the prototype controller in another angle. However, we are not sure how the final design will be, since this is a devkit controller.
