100-Dragon's Lair (1983)
For some, Dragon's Lair was the epitome of coin-op goodness. For others, it was their first adventure game. However, it was also one of the best looking games of its time. Why? Because it introduced animated characters and backgrounds, with gameplay playing out like a cartoon. Now, with cel-shading, the technique appears amateurish and tedious, but for its time, it was revolutionary.
Say what you will about gameplay and fun factor determining a game’s worth, but where would it be without graphics? Graphics to draw a player in, graphics to create a realistic environment, graphics to properly interpret the story at hand – even functional graphics so we can just enjoy the damn game.
