Until Dawn is an upcoming horror adventure video game that is currently in development by Supermassive Games, the developer that worked on LittleBigPlanet Vita and the high definition port of the classic PS2 shooter Killzone.

Development

Until Dawn will played by using the PlayStation Move controller, the Move controller will be used to control the flashlight in the game that serves as your primary means of illumination. Will Byles, Executive Creative Director for Until Dawn had the following to say about the game: “To play the game you’ll use the PS Move controller in a totally natural way. It’ll act as your flashlight, guiding your way through the darkness, or when you want to use something the controller will intuitively map your actions in the real world to those of your character’s hand in the game world.”

Players will be bounced around amongst a group of playable characters. During the summer period of 2012, gamers and press thought that the game was stuck in development hell, but the project was still very much alive. While Sony Computer Entertainment declined to comment on the game, Supermassive Games assured both consumers and critics both that “Until Dawn is still very much in development”. Although the developers have been intentionally vague as the game isn’t expected to generate massive streams of revenue, this is what they had to say about the game and how it would work:

“It’s Teen Horror so obviously it’s isolated, the power’s out and the phones don’t work! You’ll play through the story as multiple characters, sometimes with a friend and sometimes on your own to discover who it is that’s intent on killing you and your friends. It’s up to you how you play, so we don’t know how your story will go or who’ll be there with you at the end.” The developers have been working hard to ensure that the game fully conveys the cult feeling of teen horror movies that have become a staple of American cinema.

They have been working with television cast actors to try and bring the characters to life in a believable way, “We’ve been working on this game for a while now, working with Hollywood writers and US TV talent, doing our best to bring the Teen Horror experience to PlayStation. Inspired by classic movies in the genre, we expect that Until Dawn will draw you in with its characters, killer dialogue and shocking, twisted story. “

Supermassive Games don’t have many games under their name that can be considered successful by any stretch of the imagination, so this game is expected to bring the developer to the next level or leave them in mediocrity.

Story

Until Dawn

The game’s plot is set to follow an unlucky group of teenage friends as they spend the night in a log cabin during the anniversary of their now deceased friend. Unbeknownst to them however, they are being pursued and hunted by insane serial killer intent on murdering them. The official line from Supermassive Games regarding the story is “On the anniversary of their friends’ disappearance, a group of classmates visit the site of the mystery to bury their ghosts and get some closure. Little do they know, they’ll end up burying each other instead…?”

Gameplay

Until Dawn is played by using the PlayStation move as a means of controlling the flashlight in the game, this is the crux of the horror element. The game’s serial killer has not been commented on so we don’t yet know if this character is one that the player must actively avoid (like in other games like Slender and Outlast) or whether he is some sort of enemy that reacts to player progress only.

The player won’t be playing as only one character, the game switches between members of the teenage party, how this will affect gameplay is also not known. Speculation points towards fetch quests and puzzle solving, but there are not facts to support these claims.  The game has a certain visually similarity in the fluidity of the gameplay and how its “mastery” of PlayStation Move could help drive the adventure game genre forward.

Characters

There are currently no details surrounding individual characters, but what we do know that the characters are set to reflect the stereotypical teenagers found in the American Teen Horror movies that have seen a decline in popularity since the turn of the decade. We do know that they are currently living through the anniversary of a deceased friend.

Note: This wiki will be updated once we have more information about the game.
