GRID Autosport is a simulation racing video game that is currently in development by Codemasters who are best known for their DiRT and Operation Flashpoint video games. The title, which will be running on the EGO Engine (which was jointly developed by Codemasters and Sony Computer Entertainment) is set to be published by Codemasters as well and is expected to launch across last generation consoles and the PC only.
Slated to launch on June 27th 2014 in Europe and June 24th in North America, the game will be available on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC at retail and by digital download. GRID Autosport will be a sequel to the well received 2013 racing title Grid 2.
Development
The development cycle for GRID Autosport has been curiously quiet with information being drip fed to the public through the Codemasters Grid blogs and previews with media outlets. The following is what we know about the game so far.
Codemasters is claiming that they have been working closely with the gaming community as well as actual racing drivers and race enthusiasts to help better design and produce GRID Autosport. Vehicle handling that has been reworked and tweaked to recreate the feeling of racing in exotic sports cars “hitting an authentic sweet-spot between arcade and simulation handling.” GamingBolt’s own Kurtis Simpson writes (after previewing GRID Autosport on PC), “There’s a high level of authenticity and professionalism that flows through the entire game, even in it’s street racing events. GRID still feels like GRID, but it also seems to have matured with the type of image that the game is going for.”
An important part of any racing game that players always take note of, is that of the AI. Codemasters are boasting that their advanced and realistic AI will actively defend their place in the pack and even try to keep you out of their line if it’s a more beneficial spot on the track. If you race closely or dangerously, weave in between other racers and take risks to gain a step up the position ladder you may even be able to force the AI to spin out while they try and avoid you.
Codemasters Racenet will be making a return appearance given players and their friends the opportunity to form and join racing clubs where they can receive new and different challenges on a weekly basis, keep up to date with their stats on specific tracks, create a custom livery for themselves and their vehicles.
After making the mistake of removing the much loved and hardcore racing gamer admired cockpit view from the previous game, it will be making it’s highly anticipated return. The immersive first person view that allowed for a great sense of actually sitting behind the wheel of a powerful vehicle drew ire from the community when it was absent from the previous game, listening to fan feedback the cockpit view has been restored to its rightful place.
Gameplay
Gameplay in the Grid series of games has always boiled down to being a arcade / simulation racing game with a core based on putting the player in a position similar to that of being in a sports car themselves.
Driving is similar to what you might find in other slightly more arcade styled racing like Need for Speed or Burnout but balanced with more simulation based games like Forza, striking an interesting balance between the two.
Cars
On the 3rd of June 2014 the full set of available cars in Grid Autosport was unveiled by Codemasters introducing 5 groups that sections the car in terms performance and usability. Further sub dividing these groups are their tiers which denote speed in order.
Tiers:
Tier 1 cars are the slowest cars available to the player.
Tier 2 cars are neither the fastest or slowest cars available to the player, they sit in the middle.
Tier 3 cars are the fastest cars in the game, most likely being high performance cars or exotic sporting cars.
The five groups are:
