Destiny First Reviews Out

It's a bust.

Destiny Concept Art (9)

Bungie’s science fiction epic, persistently online next generation shooter launched on Tuesday, and there has been a dearth of reviews, mostly because Activision and Bungie didn’t send out any review copies until the official launch of the game. Such an occurrence is always suspicious, and in Destiny’s case, there was the simple question of whether or not this implied that the game, no matter its absolute quality, might not be all that it had been hyped up to be.

And now, we have the first batch of reviews coming in, and… it seems to be fairly muted in response. While there are a couple of predictable scores in the 9 and above range, most of the scores seem to fall squarely in the 7-8 category, with some going as low as 6. The consensus is that the game lacks any depth to its actual gameplay and shooting mechanics, and its storytelling is several steps back from Bungie’s previous games; it is also viewed as Bungie’s weakest game since before Halo: Combat Evolved, which is pretty damning.

Currently, the Metascore of the game stands at just 81, with the user score an even lower 6.4. The game has so far had some nice sales immediately following launch, but if word of mouth continues to be negative, it could completely kill the legs on this game.
