Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain

Hideo Kojima, the man behind the Metal Gear Solid franchise has revealed his reasons why Kojima Productions are obsessed with 60 frames per second. Kojima’s last game, Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes also ran at 60fps on both the PS4 and Xbox One.

Kojima believes that resolution is not the only important factor as puts major emphasis on frame rate. He believes that frame rate’s importance is next to 3D. He quotes the example of Showscan, a cinematic technology developed Douglas Trumbull which uses 70mm film, but projects it at 60 frames per second. This is 2.5 times the standard speed of movie film which is 24 frames per second.

The Hobbit [movie] ran at 48 frames per second which became a hot topic with many claiming it to be a unexpectedly painful journey. Then there are reports that James Cameron might be shooting the sequel to Avatar at 120fps, using Douglas Trumbull’s 4K 3D system that films at 120 FPS.

As Kojima has taken his inspiration from Hollywood he believes that the games industry has moved forward as well. This is the reason why he is obsessed with 60fps.

Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain will run at 1080p and 60 frames per second on the PlayStation 4.
